In a way, the film serves as a re-imaging of the Japanese people, focusing on the humane and anti-war ideology, using a country doctor helping the poor and sometimes crossing path with the love of his life. There's a very methodical slow pace to this from from Heinosuke Gosho, yet it touches the right strings to make it work. It's rather beautiful.
