The 1970 section is perhaps Salles's best film -- horrors of dictatorship through the eyes of a family woman watching her home being demolished minute by minute and not quite grasping how/why. After that, Torres manages to hold the film together all by her powerfully restrained performance, because then narrative becomes not actually about her story as human rights activist, which is relegated to a couple of late scenes and expository intertitles. It also didn't need three endings.
