According to Joe Dante, this must have been an influence on 2001, and it's possible that it inspired Planet of The Vampires too. While it lacks the obvious technical sophistication of 2001, it is a largely successful early attempt at intelligent and serious sci-fi within the medium of film, even if it's let down slightly by Soviet 'space race' propaganda. The sets are creative and the B+W visuals are striking, but it's a transitional entry in the genre, caught between two worlds.

This is like a missing link between Forbidden Planet and 2001. It focuses more on the day-to-day activities of it’s crew instead of a exploring a bigger plot. It’s also more serious than American sci-fi from the same era; there's only a couple scenes that provide unintentional hilarity such as the depiction of crews leisure activities - "futuristic" dancing and the robot. Cinematography and sets are also impressive, but the lack of stronger narrative starts to take it's toll towards the end

Many elements of IKARIE XB-1 seem to have spawned entire movies so for that reason alone it's a fascinating watch, even if it's dated, monochromatic, and occasionally a bit dull. If you check it out, make sure to get the Czechoslovakian version, not the American version, because the endings are totally different (although it's worth noting the ending of the American version is peculiarly similar to the ending of THE PLANET OF THE APES).

Seems like a more serious (and bleaker) attempt at speculative fiction than most of its contemporaries.

Ain't not bad. I generally find pre-70s sci-fi dated (there are of course exceptions), but this is a seminal film that really influenced a lot of later shit I love, and once they venture outside the ship, it really picks up. Plus it's a nice brisk 82 minutes.

Based on the best space-invasion sf traditions of 60s. With spacecrafts size of a head, old-school robot from far XXth century and endless dialogue about how we all gonna die. Just superb!

Czech film made in the early 60s, loosely based on Lem's novel, The Magellanic Cloud. Initially edited and redubbed for English-speaking audiences, taking (interesting) liberties with the plot; the uncut, original language version has only been made available in recent years. It's paced fairly well, but could have been padded out more, taking time with certain aspects. Regardless, it's interesting, the atmosphere is great and I'd consider it a must-see for sci-fi film fans.

Esse filme é melhor e mais influente do que usualmente se dá crédito, ele praticamente inaugurou a moderna ficção científica da guerra fria, apesar do final original ser muito mais otimista do que se via no período. Box Versátil Clássicos Sci-fi Volume 6.

Loved the robot and score is great. There's a few shots here, especially the hallway work, that Kubrick clearly lifted for 2001.

Sci-fi is much better with no romanticized version of space. Great score as many have noted

Sometimes it is kind of interesting to look at or listen to, but even if it seems clear that it influenced some better films (and probably STAR TREK too), the narrative is really quite slapdash and the themes rudimentary. I have not read the Stanislaw Lem novel on which this is based, and which was censored when it was released, but it seems unlikely that this film really captured the themes of the book. Even the subplot about nuclear weapons seemed little more than an episode.

You can’t fault the film for its ambition, but aside from some memorable images and techniques - put to better use in later classics such as 2001 and Star Wars - this isn’t particularly exciting. Some tighter direction and fewer dialogue would’ve made the film feel more like a challenging sci-fi and less like a cringey soap opera in space.
