This was meant to be a comedy? Decent enough concept, but woeful execution, as nothing is hilarious, and any kind of commentary is run into the ground by repetition. It thinks it's smart, but treats the audience like they are just as stupid as those in the society it depicts.

It seems like Mike Judge was so disgusted with the state of pop culture and America in general he just decided to make this ultra sarcastic heavy handed piece of satire. Unfortunately, subtlety isn't his strong suit because there were plenty of throwaway poop, fart, and sex jokes here. With a bit of refinement and more wit in the writing I could see this as being a suitably scathing bit of comedy. It's mildly amusing but not clever especially coming from the guy who gave us office space.

A movie of hit and miss. Some of the "predictions" of how we might end up are spot on a brilliant while others are sort of 'blah' (farting movie). The humor is very hit-and-miss and unfortunately doesn't quite hold up the parts of the film that are slow. Overall, I think it's an enjoyable film that gets dogged on a bit too much because it's not as good as Office Space

Its satire is shallow and generally unfunny; it demonstrates a lack of critical thinking on its part that rivals those of the inhabitants of its straw-future world. In this light then it is not surprising that those who take it at face value also demonstrate the same lack of critical thinking, but it does not make it any less annoying. Shocking that this came from Mike Judge, but I guess everyone is allowed a failure now and then.

I don't know why they set this 500 years in the future, I'd say we're much closer than that. This isn't brilliant satire, but it's on the mark and the screen is crammed with lots of great little sight gags. If it comes off as blunt and somewhat predictable, at least its heart is in the right place.

I really like the idea behind this movie, and a lot of the jokes were really clever and hilarious, but I feel like the film itself could have been smarter. The tone is that of a dumb comedy when in fact it could be a brilliant satire if it were taken a bit more seriously. Very enjoyable though.

I think the core concept is brilliant, and something I've always thought about in terms of the way natural selection works and how dumber people tend to have more kids than smarter people. I think the story has a bunch of funny moments, although some of the humor is in poor taste by today's standards. I think the weakness is that they focus a little too strongly on the dumbness of some characters, to the point of making them unlikable, and the story could be stronger.

The idea of this being prescient commentary is non-sense. Its framing that society is just genetically stupid rather than exploited is absurd, especially considering its incredibly juvenile view of what intelligence actually is. As commentary of Bush era politics, it says nothing beyond "wow, only an idiot would support this!" Which is such an ignorant and self-masturbatory way of viewing the world. Not to mention the taboos it associates with "idiocy" are repulsive. Liking sex is not idiotic.

It is just so stupid. Everything's wrong with this movie. It's not even funny. And, to people trying to see a satire in this movie: just don't. It's pure entertainment, there's nothing smart to take away from it. From the premise that intelligence is an inheritable trait, to the ultra-simple views on evolution. If ever there were an intelligence problem in the US today, it would be a systemic/cultural problem, not a genetic/natural one.

Cinema_Asia's review is so spot on that I can't really say much more.
Judge completely abandons the subtlety of his brilliant comedies like King of the Hill and Office Space and lets the world this film exists in overtake the narrative. Instead of poking fun at the brainless society-to-be, we are constantly annoyed by the inhabitants. We see enough of this in every day life that it's not enjoyable on film. That could be the point, but better handling of the satire could have been hilarious.

The growth of stupidity is an entirely legitimate question, and this movie draws attention to a genuine phenomenon, but it also unfortunately presents a very dumbed-down account of the causes of that growth, and thus, unable to develop any real critique, ends up having nowhere much to go, a fact experienced by the viewer as the joke seeming to wear rather thin.

I don't know what's scarier: the possibility that our (mainstream) culture is heading this way and this movie may prove to be unfortunately prophetic, or that I laughed (ironically) more at the dumb content of this future (Ass: The Movie, Hit in the Nuts) than the satirically intelligent jokes.

The casting of Luke Wilson as the lead and the obvious narrative are fatal flaws. Funny moments exist, but in all its scatology, it will always play redheaded stepsibling to Judge's golden children: Office Space or King of the Hill. Had potential to be clever, but as another user pointed out - it has been dumbed down as much as the straw man civilization it portrays, in a nauseating feedback loop of entropic condescension & dystopia. A big disappointment. I’ve enjoyed Judge’s comedies (Office Space, Silicon Valley) and this had a fun premise, but the film just does not deliver. The budget was not enough to pull off the dystopian visuals and many of the gags/predictions already feel outdated; Judge seemed to miss the raise of smartphones while using porn as basis for a lot of the humor just isn't funny. Satire about guns and celebrity worship fare better. Wilson is likable as the lead while Rudolph doesn't get much to do.

Its prescience makes this film less funny than uncomfortable to watch – while you can’t blame a film for time catching up to it, it does mean that some of the absurdisms have lost their bite; after a fairly sharp and clever first act, Judge and Cohen seem to struggle developing their premise, settling in to a standard adventure/journey saga. Hampered further by Wilson and Rudolph, both ill-equipped to serve as anchors, leaving Crews to swoop in and steal the film as the maniacal president.

A film ironically far ahead of it's time, while also being guilty of not aging well. With a bigger budget and a more clever script this could've been an instant cult classic. It strives to be intelligent but it's execution is crude and crass, often resorting to cheap toilet humor. Even so, on concept alone it earns it's merit to some degree. It's still a quick and digestible watch, and it's something you won't soon forget. A comedy that with the right perspective, is actually a horror.

Idiocracy satirises the direction of the American people and culture in the least subtle way, that is unfortunately shockingly relevant over a decade after its release. The film itself is crude, annoying and at times genuinely funny. The production (the actors, clunky dialogue, shoddy CGI) has a B-movie feel about it, but the film runs under 90 minutes and doesn’t overstay its welcome. An acceptable satire that doesn't do much more than grant a few laughs but definitely doesn't undersell on fun. It's a fun premise with good execution and a fun cast of characters. Don't expect much more but enjoy it!
