Lumbardy, Italy, seventeenth century. Renzo and Lucia's love story is jeopardized by Don Rodrigo, a wicked nobleman, who is interested in Lucia. When she refuses his attentions he has her kidnapped and brought to a convent whose prioress is a nun as wicked as he is. Mario Camerini's I promessi sposi [The Spirit and the Flesh] (1941) is a uneven affair. At best, it's expressive and adventurous. Most of the time it feels like they're just trying to keep the story afloat without nailing the emotion down, and with a leading man in Gino Cervi coming across weak in his role. The leading lady Dina Sassoli on the other hand fit the part and overall the production looked nice, making this, with it's ups and downs, a average Italian costume drama.

Based on a successful 19th century historical novel, "The Betrothed", but whittled down to a competent if unremarkable romantic costume drama. The strong Catholic underpinnings don't help. Very nice sets, though.
