This one is so difficult to rate because it's obvious motives of educating the public about the Red tactics. It's so clear about it's anti-Communism message that it as a noir-like crime picture was nominated for Best Documentary! Beat that!

Based on the dubious testimony of a discredited informant this is a hit job on the Communist party with I'm sure a bit of truth among a whole lot of embellishment. There is some interesting material in here, looking at this as the propaganda piece it is it's incredible how badly the supposed patriots come off. Not as much as the cartoon villain Communists, but still. The irony in some of the patriotic speeches is staggering, which makes it somewhat enjoyable, but still tiresome overall.

If you can tolerate the film's quaint treatment of communism, you'll probably like this noir about a guy - well, it's kinda self-explanatory, no? Some good action, consistently entertaining, kinda funny even if unintentionally so.

This film goes to ridiculous lengths to demonize Communism. It's pure pro-HUAC paranoid propaganda. But if you ignore its political agenda, it's not all bad. It does a good job of earning sympathy for the hero (a solid if unremarkable performance by Lovejoy) and his heartache over being branded a "slimy Red" by his loved ones. It's got some exciting sequences and raw brutality, and fine photography. I have to admit I wasn't bored... but that was partly because it was so hilariously one-sided.
