I Vitelloni is a great character study but it lacks both the drama and the personal endearment that make Fellini's best films so exquisite. This is certainly a worthwhile endeavor and clearly it shows signs of what's to come in his catalog, but it's certainly not among his top tier.

"I Vitelloni" is Italian slang for slackers or layabouts, but it literally translates to "veal calves", which is perfect for this group of soft, pampered men. Fellini's third feature (his second solo directorial outing) is his first real masterpiece ... a brilliant character study that shine both a critical and sympathetic eye on a group of men failing to make the leap out of self-indulgent adolescence. It's got Fellini's seductive flowing rhythms and is just a joy to watch.

As blasphemous as it may seem, this viewer prefers Lucas' partial remake, American Graffiti. Fantastical Fellini > 'realist' Fellini. A legitimate preference. Nonetheless, the pieces were really beginning to lock into place here, and there are many strong scenes that hint at future greatness.

This inspiration for "Mean Streets" and "Diner" has the vitality and memorable faces of the typical Fellini film, but it is less pretentious and grotesque. I found its sweet fatalism both sad and charming.

Rich with things to come. Genius ending sequence. Nino Rota's scoring is wonderful as always, and fittingly subdued here.

In his third film Fellini really grows into his full potential. The plot is somehow hard to follow, and the story isn't completely decided whether it wants to be an ensemble piece or focus on just one couple, but all of that hardly matters. The film is so energetic and vivid, so full of true insight, so rich in most imaginative detail, folksy music, humor tinged with tragedy and vice versa, to put it simply - it's Fellini, the young, unspoiled Fellini, unpretentious and brilliant.

A nice if rather pedestrian story about small-town life, the transition to adulthood, and that good old feeling of paralysis. You've seen it before, but it doesn't hurt to see it once more.

The least like FELLINI Fellini movie that I’ve seen but it’s still somewhat interesting. I like how outwardly WW2 plays such a key role even in these slackers lives. I mean it would’ve had to have hooks in every hitch of your brain but compared to the social politics of something that Baumbach would do in the 90’s. Worlds apart

I usually do not like Fellini and find him overly self-indulgent often, but this was one of the first of his movies I've seen that I actually kind of liked. I still didn't really love it, but it wasn't pretentious and was fairly interesting. Some of the characters have relatively little to do and it drags at certain points, but it's a perfectly acceptable film and I'm glad to finally see something from him that I didn't dislike.

A fictionalized autobiography showcasing some "college age" friends whose best years are now decidedly behind them. It's a little aimless, as the majority of time goes toward the least-likeable of the gang, although he at least gets a decent character arc, while most of the others' stories feel a little unfinished. A little more somber than Amarcord, yet it still has that coming-of-age feel to it.

You can see the roots for films like American Graffiti or Dazed and Confused here, but most of the characters and their experiences weren't super compelling.

A very disjointed film with off pacing and a bunch of headless subplots, the only exception being the increasingly infuriating story of that major douchebag Fausto. This is a stunningly empty, sleep-inducing movie that took an unoriginal and uneventful script and kept it so. Seriously, name one interesting thing that happens in this. This is the kind of shit you see in old melodramas by complete unknowns. At least they didn't think that making a film with 0 ideas results in a meditation on life.

By the time I watched this, I had learned to ignore the praise for Fellini and expect very little. I was not disappointed in "I Vitelloni," but what I found was yet another meandering plot with uncompelling characters and a non-ending. Pretty typical Fellini, I'd say.

Brimming with authenticity and lifeaffirming scenes. Fellini captures the five slackers with just the right combination of irony-fueled ridicule and sympathy. Highly influential: see Diner, Beautiful Girls, Mean Streets, American Grafitti, St. Elmo's Fire, The Deer Hunter (partly) or any other sligthly nostalgic coming of age-story about a gang of loser friends. I really enjoyed it.

I understand what Fellini was going for here but for me, the tone never came together, and I never formed the connection with the characters that one hopes for in a freewheeling, youthful film like this. Ultimately I thought this would be a lot better.

to me, this feels like fellini practicing. it has his magic and sense of tragedy, but it feels confused between an ensemble study of male friendship and a love story, and ends up shortchanging both. in the end, its majority focus on the couple makes it more of a message movie than an ambiguous exploration that his future self is so good at. but it is still enjoyable, vivid and humane.

Very energetic, but I had absolutely no sympathy for Fausto, who was just a total scoundrel. Aside from that, I felt the film was melodramatic and lacked the flair of Fellini's later films (although some shows through in the excellent final sequence).

The film is full of life and energy, the scene at a party being one of the key highlights, and has a good sense of wit. Fausto is well brought to the screen because though he isn't likeable, he is after all a slimy individual who would cheat on his wife given half the chance, you can still sympathise for his situation. You feel sympathy for his aimlessness and his feeling of being trapped to his home town. It's a sad, charming, sensitive and even slightly dreamy little film.

Even Fellini's less stylized and more understated films have a detached quality. A simple and sensitive observational drama, its bittersweet tone is admirable, but it just doesn't grab me.

I've never been a crazy-huge fan of Fellini's work (not that I've seen all that much of it), but it's easy to see his emerging talent in this film. The film is somewhat autobiographical, which you can easily tell, and I liked that aspect of it. It's not overly exciting, but it has a nice feel to it with some quiet pieces of humour.

"I Vitelloni" is the first film I have seen from Fellini that justifies his reputation. It's nothing terribly inspired, but it is greatly enjoyable thanks to a finely written script, first-rate performances and tight direction. But mostly because 'i vitelloni' are all likeable and realistic characters. The affection we create for them fuels some touching moments as well. Overall, it is an entertaining, engrossing and poignant picture -just what "La Strada" failed to be.

Feels surprisingly modern, given the influence its had over New Hollywood. Perhaps this has something to do with the film's setting, which must have seemed strange at the time, since a voice-over clearly makes the story sound like a reminiscence yet the action unfolds in what was then the present day. The effect would've been like seeing a film from the future. Now we don't have that curious disconnection, and Fellini's post-dubbed sound and floating camera enhances the memory-dream aspect.

A nice film about that time in life when you're old enough to be an adult but still yearn to be free of responsibility. While the direction isn't as accomplished as in Fellini's later work it's solid and self assured and the story is quite touching and well done, even if not really extraordinary.

A solid, no-frills early Fellini that I liked. It doesn't do much to distinguish itself, but it's well-crafted, enjoyable to watch, and has some good characters. A little longer and slower than it needs to be, perhaps.

The viewer is left wanting more of a portrait of the guys as a whole, considering that the focus is on Fausto, an unsympathetic character unsubtly played by Fabrizi. The moral of that portion of the narrative seems to be: a good marriage is held together by fears of suicide and beatings. But there are great little touches, like wanting to stop to eat during the search for Sandra, and the cuts to everyone asleep in their beds during Moraldo's final scene with Guido is great and affecting.
