In 1968, mad, radical-feminist genius Valerie Solanas shot pop-art icon Andy Warhol, seriously wounding him. This film traces her bizarre life leading to that moment, including the writing of her "SCUM Manifesto," which decrees males biologically obsolete. (MGM)

Taylor is absolutely blistering; Harris' Warhol feels both genuine and like a celebrity impersonator, which may very well be what makes it genuine. Harron drops us into the late-60s arthouse NYC crowd without a guide, making Solanas' descent into madness frighteningly releatable. And ending on a question mark. Nicely done.

Some good performances and an unusual protagonist doesn't change the fact that except for the shooting & 1 moment where Solanas is confronted by Imperioli's gay, there's never a riveting moment. Harron makes a point of showing us variations of femininity (drag queen, butch, etc) but never offers any insights on the differences. This sympathetic portrayal of a psychotic who attempted murder & feminism's embrace of her "classic" manifesto also doesn't speak well for feminism itself.

As with every other Mary Harron movie, I would have rather have seen somebody else's treatment of the material.

Interesting study of Solonas' fall into insanity and madness (though perhaps there's not too far to fall); reminiscent of THE KING OF COMEDY and Taylor's incandescent, "scorched earth" performance is comparable to De Niro/Bernhard; it's perhaps an unintended consequence that Solanas' distorted eye view makes it difficult to drum up much sympathy for her plight (though Harris' detached, bemused Warhol is hardly a reserve for sympathy either!) Hurt by its limited scope but still worthwhile.

Lili Taylor really holds this film up, putting in quite an intense and involved performance, even if unfortunately we don't get quite a good enough sense of why she decided to shoot Andy. But we still get a constantly entertaining film about an entertaining time, with the equally good performers alongside Taylor bringing this peculiar time setting to life.

Quem chama a Solanas de "patética" certamente não tem o mínimo discernimento do que é ser feminista, nem do que é mentalmente paranóia, muito menos do que são esssas duas coisas somadas.

My favorite moment was when Solanas and Warhol are sitting on a couch in the middle of a party, and he leans over to her and says: "Sex is really nothing, isn't it?" In truth, Solanas' infamous manifesto is smarter and more likable than this film might suggest.

The film is never rewarding and electrifying as Lili Tailor's performance -- the editing is naive, and Harron just can't fully achieve a decent tone and treatment for the rest of the cast --, but it stands out as one of the most important feminist indie features of the 1990s.

Inherently interesting stuff, and the movie treats it with dignity. Could be worse but could be better. There is something soft about Lili Taylor, and occasionally her efforts to play a rough character are noticeable. Whether it's her acting or the script or both, something isn't entirely convincing about the portrayal of Solanas. Worth watching though.

Good period atmosphere, and a powerful eccentric performance by Lili Taylor.
