Virginia works at a used book store. She's really into horror novels and discovers a really good book. It's called "I, Madman" and it's about an insane doctor who cuts off people's noses, ears, and hair and puts them on his face to please a girl he likes. Only Virginia discovers that the book is nonfiction, and every time she picks up the book to read it, she sees him. The insane doctor from the book has escaped the book into our reality. (imdb)

After a strong 1950s-set start featuring a stop-motion animation creature called "Jackal Boy", Takacs accords his promising material increasingly static treatment. Some thrills survive, though.

One of the most unique slashers to come from the genre's 80's boom period, it falls depressingly flat in points & never really makes full use of its premise. The performances are fine, with Wright & Rohner showing decent chemistry, but the script is inconsistent & does no character any favors. The plotting is lazy, the twists aren't hard to see coming, & the eventual resolution feels half-baked. All said, it's harmless, middle of the road stuff that suffers from wasted potential.

Vivid literalization of that magical process whereby a book "comes to life." (The book in question "makes Stephen King read like Mother Goose," so you might better say it "comes to death.") Clever enough, but a bit overly drawn out, especially after it abandons the Fifties period of the book illustrations.

The story is a pulpy throwback & just diverting enough, but parts of the execution are lacking - especially budget-wise. Had this been made truly independently it'd be impressive, but for a small studio funded theatrical release, it looks meant for straight-to-video. The set design & efx are basic & although the lead actress is ok enough for most of this, she has some trouble displaying genuine terror - which makes the climax, in particular, less exciting than it should be.

Starts out fairly interesting, but quickly devolves into tiresome nonsense.
