The director actor guy kinda stinks, Patton Oswalt carrying this on his shoulders like a sweaty disturbed Atlas. Indie movie crap with some mild chuckles. Keep this movie in your heart as the trailer you saw on YouTube it's much better that way

Patton Oswalt, such a mensch-y teddy bear IRL, is frighteningly good at playing sad, pathetic single men. Enjoyed a lot of the directorial and acting choices here.

I wanted to dislike this because it seemed likely to be clichéd and gimmicky, but Morosini leans into the darker side of things in his writing and directing just enough to enable Oswalt and Dratch (and even Morosoni himself at times as an actor) to make things interesting.

The film has many positive aspects, including its engrossing performances and surprising thematic commentary, but is held back by some deficiencies in the script and direction. Despite these shortcomings, the film successfully subverts genre expectations and delivers a poignant and heartfelt portrayal of a broken parent-child relationship that is quite moving and cathartic.

I think I got more laughs out of this than most. Uncomfortable laughs, but laughs nonetheless. It's conflicted and kind of dark, yet lightweight at the same time.

I'd be much more interested in the non-fiction version, but setting this up as a light-hearted dramedy is probably the better way to cope for morosini. Oswalt's performance and a solid directorial debut are why this worked well for me, and the story itself is just too messed up not to be told.

If you look at it as it’s marketed (a comedy) then I think it fails miserably. Cool, he's sexting his dad. This is a case where we're supposed to laugh solely because of the premise, like pointing something out is supposed to be funny without any real jokes behind it. It worked better as a drama, mostly because I felt bad for Franklin. There is some heart at the end, and good performances, but is ultimately pretty shallow. Now if this was hilarious? We’d be having a different conversation.

I do like when a creator's trifecta comes together. Morosini writes, directs & leads I Love My Dad, giving the film a unique, if surreal, style to non-corporeal conversations. The plot is an enjoyable blend of cringe & catharsis that plays out like a seedier Mrs. Doubtfire. There are a few issues with the pacing & the occasional odd acting choice, but on the whole the cast to a great job. Oswalt is particularly brilliant as a semi-sympathetic arsehole, followed closely by Dratch.
