While many think of this movie as the "Friday the 13th"(1980) to "Scream"(1996)'s "Halloween"(1978), however it's really more like "The Prowler"(1981) to "Scream"'s "Friday the 13th". Where "Scream" toys with slasher/horror movie tropes, "I Know What You Did Last Summer"(1997) embraces them to make a throwback classic 80 slasher, just updated with a 90's horror aesthetic. While that now may mean a lack of nudity/gore, the movie still makes an effort to showcase Jennifer Love Hewitt's cleavage.

For all its flaws, (and there are certainly more than a few), I still quite enjoyed this film. For a slasher film to rely almost solely on atmosphere building without turning to excessive gore or nudity, I have to commend it. Not only that, but there was some character development that allowed the audience to care about some of the soon-to-be victims. It's not a perfect movie, but it's a fun slasher film that is restrained in its approach. For that, more than anything, I liked it.

I Know That You Didn't Understand Scream Last Summer. Kind of a curious early entry into the 90s teen slasher revival cycle. Its attractive cast of characters seem savvy to the idea that they are part of a murder narrative that has some rules, if only they can figure them out. Unfortunately, neither they nor the writer and director have any clue how Scream advanced the horror genre, so they just end up getting butchered in traditional plodding fashion. No thrills, risible killer, terrible climax

It is amazing what nostalgia will do to you. Everything about this film transports me back to my childhood. I think if you were not around a certain age group in 1997, you would not understand the megapowers starring in this film. I think only the women were known at the time, but Phillippe and Prinze Jr were on the brink of teen stardom. The Fisherman looks exactly like Jim Varney, and I am upset they didn't use him instead.

Like most slashers, I Know What You Did Last Summer is incredibly flawed, but it has a few things that work in it's favor. There seems to be a genuine attempt at a story here, and the characters are actually given development to put them above your typical slaughter victims. It's lack of reliance on gore is also refreshing to see for this genre, as it actually builds on some general eerie atmosphere. Now, it's not incredibly inventive nor self aware, which could've made this better.

Contrary to popular belief, I.K.W.U.D.L.S wasn't made to capitalize on the success of Scream, but it certainly benefitted from its mutual association in Williamson, a complete hack of a writer whose shoddily penned screenplay is full of bad dialogue and cheap twists. It also shares Scream's emphasis on surface gloss and conventionally attractive stars (re: it's 90's MTV horror) but it has no sense of humour to curb its cacophony of cliches, and Gillespie has no clue how to generate suspense.

Everything wrong with the horror movie genre post-this era. While Scream played out like a parody and tribute, this feels like neither. In fact, it feels like Scream without the fun. It's not scary, and more offensive it has few redeeming qualities. A scene here or there can be alright, but really its poorly written and cliched.

Sometimes I dream about life in a sleepy New England town, but between this, Stephen King, and Murder, She Wrote, I wouldn't last two god damn seconds. To be fair, I wouldn't last two seconds in most movies. I'd be one of the dead hobos in Hard Target or something.

it's better as accidental comedy as it is a horror. The problem is how fast it became hard to take seriously, with Scream and Scary Movie quickly turning the late 90s slasher revival into a matter to laugh about. It how they say Austin Power ruined any possibility of making James Bond funny anymore

Despite a floppy ending, this is about as fun a Scream-approximation as there is. Love how steeped in its time it is, but knowingly so (in that "Scream" kind of way). With a little more time to bake and a better third act, I bet this one would be even more of a cult classic than it's already becoming.

Quite entertaining movie for a jump-scare horror - a genre which I never liked. It even kept me on my toes for most of the time, and that just never happens. I can certainly see why it became a cult classic. Yet, I still don't really like these kind of movies. I don't think it was worth my time, but if you enjoy jump-scares or horrors, I guess this is as good as it gets.

Top badass moment? Despite being an entirely obnoxious rich-boy who seems to exist entirely for the purpose of pissing off his friends and showing his stomach muscles off to the viewer, Ray finally does the right thing and saves The Girl from The Baddie. As well as being a huge cliché, this is (if it was real of course) a really badass thing to do. (However, he'd probably have been killed by Ben if it was real life, so it's just as well it's only a movie.) No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

The 90s was not a good decade for horror movies in a way that this film epitomizes - good looking, talentless teens in a who-done-it guessing game where the body count seems to matter even less to the characters onscreen than it does to us. Superficiality and the slasher sub-genre at its worst. That being said there are times when this movie transcends the 90s horror stereotype even while embodying them including the sequence between Geller and the killer and the very ending.

There is nothing like watching a great horror movie for the first time, and I just had the pleasure of watching this one for the very first time 13 years after its release. Screenwriter Kevin Williamson has such a perfect/unique eye for suspenseful teen horror drama with light comedy while also playing with the rules of the genre, and so many attempt to cheaply imitate him, but they just don't have his brain.

The high-glam allure of femme telestarlets Hewitt and Gellar plus the imprimatur of Williamson must have been the main magnets that drew millions of young 'plex-goers to this slicked-up rehash of the hoary '80s slasher genre. Williamson certainly brings more skill to the terror table than most of his hack '80s predecessors; like Clive Barker with _Candyman_, he employs a venerable American fright folktale involving a severed hook/hand as a clever wraparound for what's otherwise fairly standard
