Second remake of _High Sierra_. Still not as good as original. The only cool thing about it is that it has Lon Chaney Jr. in it

This is essentially a scene-for-scene remake of "High Sierra" shot in colour and Cinemascope with Jack Palance in Humphrey Bogart's role and Shelley Winters in Ida Lupino's role. It's not a bad film, but it's really inferior to the original in fairly dramatic ways.

I enjoyed Jack Palance's acting in "I Died a Thousand Times," he made the character come to life.

An awkward mix of gritty noir and cornball hokiness. Palance is great, his character really feels edgy and dangerous, and the robbery scene was loaded with tension, but you have stuff like the comedy Mexican, the reaction-shots from the annoying dog and the fake-looking car chase that really drag the film down.

Almost exactly a beat-for-beat remake of HIGH SIERRA. The major difference, of course, is casting. I like Jack Palance, but he doesn't have the world-weariness or charm of Bogart. Likewise, I'm very fond of Shelley Winters, but what she does best is playing pathetic, and this character can't be pathetic. You just end up wanting Palance to ditch her. I just felt like I'd already seen it and the update doesn't do any real updating. A competent but pointless endeavor, stick with Bogart and Lupino.
