Another pandering effort and absolute insult to your intelligence that had the entire audience laughing nonetheless. You've got the banal humour laced with childish slapstick, next is the text infused with trite sexual innuendos and last but not least, animals mating. Absolutely hilarious, right ? Right ?! Wrong !!!

Bafflingly tame for a movie on fingering, vibrators and female sexual awakening. It's the equivalent of two old virgin cat ladies on a porch, taking turns at saying "vagina" and giggling. The epitome of raunchiness is literally ducks fucking while they're being watched awkwardly. Yawn.

There's not too much going on here but it's all very pleasantly watchable and a decent way to pass the time. If not for Rupert Everett, this would score lower for me - he induced hilarity by his mere presence in any scene. Gyllenhaal was a bit too over the top and was annoying more of the time than not.

Fascinating topic, but it seems that the whole purpose of the film was to present a feminist message instead of focusing on interesting plot, characters or laughs which eventually makes it quite unbearable.

It tries maybe too hard to please, but it kind of works both as a rare Victorian romcom and as an (absurd, enjoyable) historical piece. Basically, Everett steals the show.

Eminently watchable and amusing period tale about the invention of the vibrator that owes almost everything to its stellar cast. To varying degrees everyone on screen hits their mark, but it's the primary actors - Dancy and Gyllenhaal - who really shine, blasting life into their characters and the (well-written) script. The predictable, slightly rushed conclusion stops this one from being a keeper: although that doesn't mean it's not enjoyable for its duration.

The plot isn't all that complicated, when the lead girl walks in you can tell more or less how the story will develop. But it's charming nonetheless, makes for a nice relaxing evening.

Funny and entertaining with a predictable ending that doesn't really matter. Worth a look.

Kind of very light and naïve for the topics it touched, visually okay though. Light fun for half the family

Fun fact: the vibrator was the fifth electrical device ever created. Out of need come inventions.

So very British (not in a good way), and way too cutesy for its own good. At least someone involved had a bit of a sense of the camp inherent in this... just not enough to make the flick anything approaching "good".

An unremarkable film. Formulaic, shallow, but colourful.

Apesar de ser um filme água com açucar, mostra tudo que havia de errado com o pensamento médico vitoriano (e boa parte do século XX) - e não se engane, há ainda pessoas que pensam assim, vide as feministas ainda serem chamadas de histéricas.

a well-made film with a ludicrous premise and a few good laughs - but based on the premise i thought it would be a lot funnier and more substantial than it actually was. i felt the film didn't have a lot of substance and didn't cover much that wasn't already assumed from the trailer - in all, not many surprises, plot-wise.

I thought it was a perfect little masterpiece - the least bawdy sex comedy I've seen. Director and cast carry it perfectly - occasionally the script does seem more like a play than cinematic, Gyllenhaal's dialogue is perhaps written a little on the nose, and the obligatory scene that the movie seems to promise (Gyllenhaal's character using the device) never actually happens! Otherwise it was witty, funny, and charming with a good dash of history through it. As rom-coms go, that's outstanding.

Not bad, I guess, if you like your comedy arch, your Victorian atmosphere obvious, and your feminism watered down. Maggie Gyllenhaal's extraordinary charm and Hugh Dancy's light touch keep it alive.

The film's biggest problem is how it ties the suffragette movement in w/ the origins of the vibrator. Although it's pointed out that hysteria is a trumped-up diagnosis made 2 oppress women, it also strongly suggests that all women need 2 know their place is an orgasm. Oppression never feels ugly here. Gyllenhall's feminist looks 4ward 2 jail & she (all 2 predictably) gets the better of everyone around her. By overstating the importance of the vibrator the film's women have very little at stake.

The laughs were a big part of the movie, but then you leave and realize a lot of the were from over-the-top situations. The movie is about 2 Victorian era doctors who treat women for hysteria. It said it's "based on actual events....Really", but it's exceedingly loosely based on them. Probably better to think of it as fiction.

It constantly teeters on the edge of self-parody, and the politics is a little patronising, but I found this pretty charming, and had more than one guffaw.

Well, the idea was nice. There was several funny scenes, but actually the result did not surprise at all. The end went flat as did with House of Pleasures. I expected more clear bridge to modern days.

A few good laughs. And for the negative: Predictable. Only girls will ever really like this. And there is NOTHING as unsexy as a bad copy of England in the 1880's.

At times, quite flat in humour. But with some original ideas. Still I had to laugh loudly during the movie, which does not happen that often. interesting story
