Classy, well mounted drama with good performances from Crawford and Garfield. It feels really long and really drags at times, which is its major flaw, but it's an interesting film and a very good one with a fantastic, beautifully tragic finale.

impossibly gorgeous gender-reversed A STAR IS BORN with joan motherfucking crawford and an ending to match the cukor classic.

I'm not the best audience for sappy melodramas, although the over-the-top performance was well-matched by the soaring musical score. Near the end, there was some impressive von Sternberg-style lighting. But the film felt far too long, and Levant's constant "witticisms" were making me want to push him off that balcony.

WEBRip R.A.R.B.G.

Almost a perfect montage of tragic romance. They certainly found the right tone to mold this on. And Joan Crawford & John Garfield had the right range to give it credibility. Only thing I can critique it on, is the lack of wanting to step outside of their comfort zone once they found their mood. But as a composition for the emotion they were aiming for, Humoresque (1946) shines the right way.

Only achieves its director's poetic goals during closeups of Crawford's face at her peak and the grand melodramatic finale.

I couldn't stand the soundtrack either, Joan, but killing yourself was slightly overreacting...

Absolutely wonderful music. Appropriately enough for a movie about a concert violinist, the music is an integral part of the story. Good performance from John Garfield as the cocky young musician with comic relief from an very entertaining Oscar Levant. Great violinist Isaac Stern handles the fiddle playing duties. Crawford does her best to make drunken misery look glamorous. Her performance is a true camp classic. A minor classic of the romantic melodrama genre.

Layers of intensity coupled with heavy music. Quite a good result

Joan Crawford suffers and suffers... one of those melodramas that overdoes the heart-wrenching just enough that it's pretty damn funny if you're in the right mood.
