Stricken with a bone-distorting, ultimately fatal case of acromegaly, Hatton -- once tastefully billed as "the monster man who needs no makeup" -- appeared in several low-budget 1940s fear flicks, with this rating as the sturdiest of the lot. Tidily constructed and laced with witty dialogue, this tells its tale in a streamlined yet atmospheric 65 minutes. Unfortunately for Rondo, he checked out before either this or his his other 1946 showcase, _The Brute Man_, saw the light of day.

This might be better remembered if it'd made the Creeper entirely sympathetic - a dumb & exploited dupe of the sculptor, but, established as a killer early on, one wonders what his backstory is. His simultaneous lack of planning & ability to avoid detection also raises questions. Still, this is brisk & lively. Most of the characters have an edge or are at least mouthy; the sculptor's initial turns are unexpected, as is the heroine's capability. It also presents art critics as jerks so, not bad.

A Casa dos Horrores estreava há 75 anos nos EUA. Freud intensifies para o roteirista que escreveu esse filme, ainda bem que os artistas sublimam seus desejos através de sua arte e deixam os crimes para os reles mortais. BlurayRip RARBG.

I got drawn into the freak aspect. Rondo Hatton was a very unique individual who briefly reached fame in horrors before he died abruptly of a heart attack, the same year he finally was getting starring parts. But only as a stalking monster. Manipulated into killing in slimy way by artist Martin Kosleck, who takes care of the acting in this one, as Hatton was limited to the way he looked. Has its slow spots, but also has a violent appeal which makes it different to other horrors made at the time.

Little to recommend with this bare bones cheapie. Kosleck has some great moments, but the rest of the cast is hardly at their best with little to work with. Joan Shawlee's cheesecake modeling was the only thing keeping me going.
