Hour of the Gun

A patient, determined pace that matches the convictions of its protagonist exactly. Garner and Robards give what could be their most convincing roles. Sturges westerns are becoming a fast favorite of mine.

Maltin's film guide says that this movie "begins well, becomes increasingly tedious". I disagree. This is a refreshingly unpretentious and ungentle straight-ahead Western about men doing what a man's gotta do. What Sturges did was take the Wyatt Earp story -- a myth he himself had helped implant in the public mind -- and turn it into another sublimated-Vietnam movie. Garner is surprisingly good as Earp. Robards is a better Doc Holliday than Victor Mature or Kirk Douglas

A revenge-driven western with lots of action as Earp uses the veil of the law to avenge his brother. In this version of Earp's tale, Doc Holiday holds up the moral reflection.

Extra points on this Western for BEGINNING at the shootout at the OK Corral. Also, I really enjoyed Jason Robards as Doc Holliday.

Pretty good, but I'd sooner rewatch Sturges' Gunfight at OK Corral.
