Too hyperactive, too juvenile, too predictable, and too many jokes that simply don't land. Has all the emotional depth of your average Saturday morning cartoon. Tartakovsky is better than this.

The film isn't very funny, nor is its dramatic arc particularly compelling, and it routinely violates its own internal rules and logic, in other words, passably watchable but not very good. Weirdly, I thought the musical bits were the most fun, and I would've liked to have seen what would have happened had they embraced it and gone full musical, like a family-friendly version of the Rocky Horror Picture show.

Sandler's been squeezing dumb character voices out of his mouth for the majority of his career, so it's only natural that sooner or later he'd use it to voice an animated character, but his less than stellar acting is still abundantly clear. And the inferior writing doesn't really help either.

Somehow or another, I enjoyed this more than I did ParaNorman. I think what did it for me was the bouncy, expressive animation. As for actual content: story-wise we're in familiar territory, and an incongruous R'n'B/electronic abortion of a song at movie's end knocks off a point or two, but the humour here is strong, the screenplay arguably the best Adam Sandler's read in a decade. Overall, a win. [full review at Letterboxd]

The overprotective dad dramatic thread is cliche, but Samberg’s oblivious hippie Jonny is a fun fish-out-of-water addition to the plot who has good comedic chemistry with Sandler’s uptight Dracula. The voice work is great all around (Buscemi’s dryly witty werewolf is another highlight), delivering a decent amount of goofy monster humour to complement the unique setting. The climactic trip into town with the festival and the weird cape tunnel felt contrived, but the plane takeover was funny.

I have occasionally clowned on Pixar for the set-your-watch-to-it predictability of their “time for the sad scene so we get critically acclaimed” moments. But watching this in comparison I do understand why Pixar does that - this is TOO frivolous and jokey and corny end to end and could have committed just a bit more to the characters’ emotional authenticity while still being for kids. All that aside it sets up a nice enough monster world and has a catchy ending song; it’s fine, just not great.

Adam Sandler's attempt at having an accent is more amusing than anything this film attempts. All the jokes fall flat as they lean on the superficial traits of various Halloween monsters. The core relationship is shallow, wherein the male love interest is an inept doofus who somehow gets the girl deeply infatuated in him despite having no charisma or much of a personality. Its implication of "one true love" is also nauseatingly juvenile. But hey, at least the vampire girl was pretty cute I guess?

As a fan of classic horror films such as the Universal Monster movies of the 30's and 40's I was very interested in this film. It turned out to be another in a long line of animated film I have seen that while being entertaining and fun to watch is largely a shallow watch. The humor is sometimes hit or mostly miss, the story has been done countless times, and while there is plenty of classic horror fan service, which I liked, it never really felt like this film capitalized on its premise.

It is typical children's fodder with a talented voice cast and a wasted central premise. It doesn't quite help this is basically Historical Monsters Grown Ups starting Adam Sandler, Kevin James, David Spade and Steve Buscemi as the "lovable" misfits. A misfire about misfits with a misdirected cast who try and breathe live into an age old story with the intent of aiming at children. It never quite gathers the steam it should have and never quite becomes the film it could have been.

Unexpectedly benign, good natured film lacks the sophistication of the Pixar stable, but as a cheerful, bouncy slice of kiddie entertainment it works very well; the cast of largely HAPPY MADISON alumni acquits itself beautifully, with Sandler at his most likable and appealing; Gomez and Samberg are also very engaging as the young lovers. Bright, colourful animation, minimal use of pop culture references and a genuine sweetness at its core makes this one of the nicer surprises in recent memory.

I definitely wanted more from this, that's for sure. With such a charming premise, I feel like it could've done so much better in different hands. It soars above the majority of Sandler's other recent works (which is still not saying much). If you look past the thin script and total lack of characterization, you'll find a really touching story about a father's love for his daughter and late wife. You just have to look really hard. It at least gets brownie points for those adorable bats.

Filled to the brim with juvenile gross-out humor, frenetic action that takes absolutely no time to breathe, and annoying "trendy" musical numbers. Quite charming and funny (especially the running "Blah bluh BLAH" joke), but flawed. The music is going to date the living hell out of it, especially that cliched dance party ending. I also wasn't thrilled that Mavis was the only female character of substance and that her mother was sacrificed for the sake of giving Drac a reason to be overprotective. Where Dracula's relationship with Mavis is well-developed and oddly believable, very little is put in place to earn the goosebumps the writers want you to get for Dracula's lost love or Mavis's budding romance. The result is a happily-ever-after only the most gullible minds will accept.

Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed when I had to listen to Selena Gomez complain about her isolation; Tangled had enough of that.
