Ten years ago some of the worst atrocities in the history of mankind took place in the country of Rwanda--and in an era of high-speed communication and round the clock news, the events went almost unnoticed by the rest of the world. In only three months, one million people were brutally murdered. In the face of these unspeakable actions, inspired by his love for his family, an ordinary man summons extraordinary courage to save the lives of over a thousand helpless refugees, by granting them shelter in the hotel he manages. Falls into the same trap as Schindler's List, that it becomes more about the few who survive than the genocide they are trying to escape. In a way, the portrayal of the genocide here wasn't profound enough and the events taking place become mere background noise and generic civil strife.

The comparisons to Schindler's List are warranted, although I actually like this one more than Spielberg's take on the "savior in the face of genocide" idea. Don Cheadle is very good as Rusesabaniga. For whatever reason I wasn't quite blown away by Hotel Rwanda, but it doesn't really have any very notable flaws.

Making an interesting bookend to SCHINDLER'S LIST, George's film is less a chronicle of the Rwanda genocide than an intriguing study of diplomacy (and even manipulation) as a weapon in the face of terror and horror. Cheadle's masterful stone-face work (made all the more powerful when the mask briefly slips) is perfect here, balanced by Okonedo's more visceral emoting; Nolte all but steals his scenes as the UN Colonel. A very fine film that nevertheless doesn't quite have the resonance it should.

(Viewed in 08/13): Genocide is a brutal crime against humanity. Dressing it up in the conventional(i.e comfortable) genre of a heroic triumphalist biopic is offensive at best. By focusing on the brave actions of Paul, a deporable tragedy is transformed into the African equivalent of Schindler's List where a good man puts his life at risk to save others. Consequently, we gain no insight into the greater socio-political-economic complexities driving the massacre, and the West is let off the hook.

It didn't really have much to do with the film, but when I was in high school there was totally a girl I 100% had the chance to hook up with during this film. I really dropped the ball on that one just like the UN did in Rwanda. I understand your pain ye victims of genocide, I feel your pain.

This is one of those movies that really makes you think about how the human race operates. There is a chilling quote from Joaquin Phoenix's character that says "I think if people see this footage they'll say, 'oh my God that's horrible,' and then go on eating their dinners." And it's true.

A rare situation where the movie did a good job living up to the autobiography it was based on (An Ordinary Man). Cheadle is stellar playing the role of hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina. A powerful depiction of what is going on in certain African nations where the U.N. has a tightrope to walk in trying to figure out how to do the right thing. It also shows how many different crazy ways there are to judge people, not just by race, or religion but to be killed because of the width of your nose.

Sort of a cross between _The Killing Fields_ and _Schindler's List_, it mercilessly plays the shame game, while it also gives us a real-life hero to identify with and become involved with: a humble hotel manager (Hutu married to Tutsi) who shelters over a thousand refugees in his four-star resort. Cheadle is for the most part admirably restrained, though not the part where he rips open his shirt in a cliché of despondency. Nicely, cleanly, warmly photographed by the Frenchman Robert Fraisse.

I didn't eat a day after I first saw this movie. Even though no atrocity is really shown, the power of suggestion is always present. And some lines... cold shivers down my spine. From "cleared roads" over "being halfway already" to the horrible thing one child promised (it'll make sense if you have seen the film), this is a discovery of possibly the worst genocide ever committed. And the world knew it, and just kept on watching...

It's refreshing to see a movie on this subject, and it's only natural to be deeply moved by watching atrocities and heroics and so forth, but I'm miffed that Terry George opted to make such a theatrical, Hollywoodish drama out of material that would have benefitted from greater realism and credibility.

Well this was depressing. I saw part of it on cable as a teen; it introduced me to a side of human nature I was unfamiliar with, and stayed with me. On rewatch: it's flawed, but decent. I want to read the real history now. I just wish more people were inspired by such things to learn and make the world better; but as Phoenix's character says, "they'll say, 'Oh my God, that's terrible,' and they'll go on eating their dinners." And it just gets worse when you know how often these things happen.

This is a good film, but there's something about it that keeps it from being great for me. It feels like a movie that is trying to be important, but often flinches away from the horrors it professes to depict, preferring feel good Hollywood moments to the type of rawness that might have better presented this story. Cheadle is great, but some characters feel shoehorned in just to have recognizable white faces on the screen. It just doesn't quite have the guts to be truly great.

Don Cheadle proves that leading a film is not just about putting on a performance, but it is about providing your heart and soul and giving it everything you have to send a message of love and bravery. Basically the African version of Schindler's List - and that is meant to be taken as a compliment. "You're not even a nigger. I was amazed by how detached this felt, considering its subject matter and the fact that George was the writer AND director. Cheadle is good, but he doesn't get to do much beyond cry and panic. Schindler's List comparisons are inevitable, and this film fails relative to the former primarily in its refusal to acknowledge the tragedy at hand other than by us being told so. We never see anything beyond a few corpses in a film about a genocide. Milquetoast film-making at best.

it's the tale of a man who's primarily looking out for himself and his family in a time of political unrest and genocide. however, after having witnessed the inhuman conduct of the party he supports firsthand, he feels compelled to save as many people as possible from their certain fate by using his previously gained influence with high ranking officials and rich business associates. long story short: it's schindler's list with blacks, not as gripping and enacted on a somewhat smaller scale.

Gripping account of carnage of an African tribe by another, but with a focus on rare humanitarian efforts by a hotel manager despite his life and that of his family being hugely endangered. I've had a hard time rating this film. I feel as though I may be rating it so low because of some sort of shallow wish to disagree with the critical acclaim, as I can't place my finger on why it didn't do much for me. Hotel Rwanda is an interesting look at how one man can achieve great things through diplomacy and a bit of luck, but I feel like the filmmaker's completely failed to capture the horrendous nature of the genocide and the things that went on.

"I think if people see this footage they'll say, 'oh my God that's horrible,' and then go on eating their dinners," he says. It's absolutely true. Hotel Rwanda incriminates each and every one of its viewers as members of a passive, self-involved society. When the movie ends, we are exhilarated, defeated, drained, and overjoyed, all at once. And like all good movies, it makes us think about how we can start changing our own lives, too.

In the same vein as the Killing Fields, this is a film that is intelligent enough to explain the absurdity of this conflict, the unforgiveable "blind eye" turning of the west, and the fact that real people with real emotions were caught up in it, not just "africans". Excellent performances from Cheadle, Okenedo and Pheonix, although Nolte was "odd". As in the last King of Scotland, the real horror of conflict is sanitised but the tension is maintained superbly. Horribly excellent

"Hotel Rwanda" benefits from the power of its story and excellent performances, mainly from Cheadle and Okonedo, to offer some dramatically potent scenes. However, it's also visually drab, poorly directed, crudely manipulative and it lacks a personality. The script is relatively solid, but George's uninspired, made-for-TV approach drags the whole thing down, and the film often feels more like a lecture than a piece of storytelling. It's still compelling and decent, but overall unremarkable.
