No, wait, hear me out. Maybe these madcap farces should be taught in film schools. Remember that bit on the piano? That’s Golino on level but everyone, and every prop, in the shot adhered to make it look like she’s not. Why? For a joke that may not work, but it kinda does because it tries. Remember that sex bit? That’s Golino raising her body temperature to cook two t-bones medium rare. Why? Because that’s a joke that may not work but we’re 3 minutes into it and not backing down.

Perhaps this rating is overly generous, and maybe nostalgia plays a role, but Hot Shots remains the last of the truly memorable parody film franchises that's not in the same class as Airplane or Naked Gun but is far more inspired than what came after 1993 when the genre was in its death throes. Sheen is a complete natural at straight faced comedy, ratcheting up laughs with doe-eyed charm, and he is effectively mirrored by Bridges who, along with Nielsen, was really the king of this dumb domain.

Totally not funny at all. I was disappointed by the quality of this movie after The Naked Gun. (which was written by Abraham as well.)

I loved this movie as a child. Unfortunately, that type of humor doesn't quite hold up anymore. During my rewatch, it only got one legitimate laugh out of me - provided by Valeria Golino's understated disgust upon learning Topper really has the eyes of his father. It gets some points for being creative with its physical and prop humor. But overall, it doesn't do it anymore for me.

I couldn’t get around to Top Gun Maverick this weekend so I decided to watch the spoof instead. It makes it work not through any particularly genius comedic set piece but simply by throwing five hundred jokes a minute so it can’t help but stick enough of them to make you laugh. Many of you are wondering what's wrong with my pants; well they started running short on materials right before they got to the knees, so don't give me any shit.

I would assume this film was very much a product of its time. Unlike Airplane! where majority of the jokes and humour have stood the test of time, Hot Shots! felt kind of flat and forced, and truly forgettable. There was an almost-passable and almost-funny Full Metal Jacket gag, a funny Rocky sketch and that's about it really. And to be honest, 3 months after watching the film I had to google the mentioned scenes to remember them so yeah, not very memorable.

Hot Shots is one of those movies where I can't tell if it's good, or if it's just my exact type of humor. I never laugh as hard as I do when I watch the two Hot Shots films. Up there with Airplane in terms of timeless humor.

Why was this so hilarious to 8 year old me? Used to reenact the dogfighting scenes with toy planes and stuff. Giving it a 40 but at least 10 of those points are purely for nostalgia.

A fun parody movie with some dated references. Luckily, most of the dated references don't get in the way of the constant barrage of yucks that this movie tries to get.
Cary Elwes does a great job using his American accent to pull off the fly-boy image needed for this movie. I have never been much of a Charlie Sheen fan and his performance in this movie did nothing to change my mind about his chops as an actor.
A fun watch. Don't expect too much though.

It wants so badly to be a Zucker bros or Mel Brooks style parody, but its just not on that level. Parody movies generally work when you get a consistent stream of jokes. Here the audience mostly gets overly broad slapstick. So when the jokes start missing you have to fall back on the story which is just straight Top Gun parody. It doesn't really delve into anything other than that. So while there are a few choice laughs its largely missing the genius that make other parody movies work.

It's like the plucky little cousin of the old Zucker Brothers and Mel Brooks movies. It doesn't quite hit any of the high points that those kinds of movies hit, there are lots of repeated gags, and some of them just feel like padding. Also, how weird is it to release such a dedicated Top Gun parody five years later? It's not an awful movie, but it is kind of sloppy.

Hot Shots!, while not reaching the level of earlier Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker spoof films, is still a lot of fun and works both as a loving parody and biting satire of Top Gun, as well as a handful of other films. The comedy is strong, the actors are wonderfully deadpan, and it's really difficult to dislike it. Lloyd Bridges is a scene-stealer, and you should watch the film just to see where that character goes with each scene that passes, because you won't see such absurdity very often.

Tries too hard to be funny which is problematic when you don't have any good jokes. That said, the pace at which the movie throws stuff at you is fairly impressive and it can certainly be entertaining if you are completely wasted and watching it with good friends.

An alright spoof - relies maybe a bit too much on the plot, whereas I feel the best parody films can get away with abandoning as much of that as they can. It's a film that really revels in it's own stupidity, although I think it's to the film's credit that the cast can stay so serious - there's not much in the way of knowing winks to the audience, but it's still gag-a-minute and it has some pretty good gags too - but the pacing is a bit off and it's too concerned with plot.

"Hot Shots!" is a prototype in spoofs. Jim Abrahams and Pat Proft have created an achingly funny film for the ages. The script is hilarious and the varied jokes come roaring to life through the perfect direction and the deadpan cast, from which Lloyd Bridges and Jon Cryer arguably stand out. A classic.
