Hot Rods to Hell

Old-time stars Dana Andrews and Jeanne Crain are condemned to "Has-Been Hell" in this laughable tale of a wholesome middle-class American family terrorized by hot-rodders who have seen way too many James Dean imitators. (This may be the only time I've heard the word "splitsville" uttered with complete sincerity). But of course daddy Dana regains his manhood and everything turns out alright in the end. (Rock 'n roll provided by "Mickey Rooney Jr. and His Combo.")

This one has a dual personality; on one hand it's a traditional 60's suspense flick about a family man (Andrews) who needs to face his trauma and get his family to safety - but it's also a juvenile delinquent car-flick about aimless youth (Mimsy Farmer & co.) just looking for some kicks. The car scenes are well shot and there's a bunch of different cars to please aficionados. Veteran director Brahms does a competent job, but may be one key reason why some parts feel so out of sync and goofy.

This had the opportunity to be a taunt thrill ride much like "Duel" but squanders it with back acting and a piss poor love triangle.
