Hot Pursuit

I laughed a few times.

Two overpaid actresses play a 90-minute game of “whose mouth can make the most annoying sounds?”, and yet there’s never a clear winner.

Basically a cartoon. I'm overrating it, I know, but this is one of those movies you can just sort of brainlessly collapse into at the end of a long week, utterly comfortable in the knowledge that it's going to take you exactly where you think it is, and you're going to see exactly what you think you are along the way, but it's so bright and cheery and harmless and goofy and fast-paced that who cares. I wouldn't quite call it fun. I'd call it amusing, sporadically, kinda.

Like most buddy cop/odd couple comedies, this one has a forgettable plot and shallow characters, but unfortunately, it's never really funny enough to make up for it. Aside from a few good gags (see the increasing age/decreasing height of the ongoing news reports; the chatty Cooper on cocaine; the wild tourist bus ride), the humour is mostly just mediocre slapstick and Witherspoon and Vergara hamming up their tiresome and stereotypical caricatures (sexy, loud Latina; uptight, insecure cop).

But the engine starts sputtering almost right away. Everything's far too goofy and foolish to be smart, and nothing's nearly absurd enough to register as farce. Instead, the pic contents itself with weaving back and forth down the obstacle-laden median--hoping crude gags, tired put-downs, vapid sexual nonsense, lots of awkward pratfalls and long ogles of Vergara's curves will keep audiences revved up. Despite Witherspoon and Vergara's best efforts, Hot Pursuit fails to even be a hot mess.

The script is mostly predictable and does not offer anything new to the genre. The actors do good stuff here but the 2 leads don't have great chemistry together. Overall this film is disappointing.

Impressive. Managed to make lesbian activity with Sofía Vergara a turn-off.

An uptight and by-the-book cop (Reese Witherspoon) tries to protect the sexy and outgoing widow (Sofia Vergara) of a drug boss as they race through Texas, pursued by crooked cops and murderous gunmen.

Sure, there are a lot of jokes and moments you sit there as a guy wondering why you're putting in the time to watch this movie, and then it pulls out the occasional good one. Kind of an easy story to pull and included a boring plot twist, but it was worth a watch.

No, this wasn't any good. Some scenes were OK, like when Vergara found out what happened to her husband in the back of the car, but it still is stupid humor and that is just not my taste. However, Hot Pursuit is probably really fun when you have a drink or two :). 30/100.

Hot Pursuit is no where near as bad as other critics have said it is - it is a fun, fluffy and entertaining movie (for the most part). It surprises by showing that it isn't just another dumb comedy by introducing some unpredictable twists. Witherspoon and Vergara have an odd chemistry that works - Witherspoon has a rocky accent but is funny and Vergara is just hilarious! The production value of the film is occasionally TV Movie - esque but Hot Pursuit is generally a good time.

Maybe it was because I had such low expectations for this movie that I actually enjoyed it. It's a typical comedy where one (Reese Witherspoon) plays the uptight character and the other (Sofia Vergara) plays the crazy one; they dislike each other at first, but learn to get along, and even learn from each other. By the end, they become friends. Good, brainless fun. I would have given it a higher score, but similar movies have been made, and more successfully.

While it would be ridiculous to refer to Reese Witherspoon as underrated, I do think the sheer amount of dross she's done tends to obscure the generational talent that she is. Really, try and come up with another American actress who could have pulled off both FREEWAY and ELECTION. Even the most gifted since. Lawrence? Larson? Johansson? Kate Lyn Sheil? You know in your heart they could not. Now, what piece of crap was I reviewing again?

Hot Pursuit commits the one sin from which a comedy cannot recover: it isn't funny. Almost all flaws in a comedy can be overlooked if you're laughing frequently, but I laughed maybe once during Hot Pursuit, and that's a generous "maybe."

Sofia Vergara's chest has more charisma than any of the characters.

Shrill and unfunny, Hot Pursuit bungles what should have been an easy opportunity to showcase Reese Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara's likable odd-couple chemistry.

Exactly what you would expect. For me, it started out atrocious (Witherspoon was a terrible cop) but progressively got better as the recurring gags and the friendship improved. Funny scenes involving the deer and the bus. The love interest didn't add or subtract from the movie. Acceptable ending. One of these movies that you'll watch if it's already on. Fav scene: Witherspoon sneaking into the party as a man and getting in on her masculine/non-feminine features.

While there is much to complain about with this comedy, at least it was sometimes comical and light fun. Many of the jokes didn't work, but there was enough to enjoy and a few comical scenes. There was nothing believable in this silly romp. Not a complete waste of time. I'm pretty sure I couldn't sit through it again though.

Stupidest thing I've seen in a long time...

A little offensive, but immensely hilarious. Vergara is perfect. The ending isn't great, but it's not as bad as a lot of comedies (they all feel such a need these days to have some didactic moral, and it's tiresome & condescending). Overall, it's definitely a guilty pleasure.

There's nothing particularly bad about it; but also nothing in it is good.

The two actresses may have become friends during production, but they forgot to put any sign of that growing friendship into their acting or script where it might have actually mattered. This make the conclusion and epilogue terribly flat. Worse, it's not funny and their actions make no sense.

A laugh could die of loneliness in this shrill, slapstick buddy farce. The proven comic gifts of Witherspoon and Vergara have gone MIA.

It's not a good sign when a comedy puts you to sleep, like this one did. Reese Witherspoon should be embarrassed her name is attached to it.
