SPOILERS I was not expecting him to be the killer lmao, that was fun. Unfortunately, the film drags a lot, I wished it was campier and more homoerotic (quoting my friend: “I bet they use those gloves for fisting”)

It's certainly charming, but I wouldn't call it a good film; it's very messy. The performances are also hilariously bad. Gotta love the homoerotic undertones though.

The film has a certain charm to it. I've been watching a ton of Italian horror films lately so seeing this UK film was quite jarring.

Sort of a predecessor for latter AIP/Price and slasher flicks with emphasis on inventive kill scenes. Made in '59, it's not that graphic, but contains some pretty brutal scenes anyway. It's also not as stylish as e.g. Hammer films from the same era, but production values are still above average. Michael Gough hams it up as the lead. The film starts out strong, but runs out of steam in it's second half and can barely sustain it's duration of 80 mins. A bit of a missed opportunity.

The intro is actually a fun Castle-esque opening that's just off-kilter enough to work and doesn't overstay its welcome. Story proper is smart enough to begin with a bang - probably the most gruesome murder of the film happens about two minutes into the first scene. It must've been jarring as hell to '59 audiences. Aside from that, though, t's outdone at almost every turn by other films and the Jeckyll and Hyde hypnotism business never seems to come to a head.

This is chockful of justly infamous money shots: the steel-pronged binocs that claim the film's first fatality, a grisly guillotine sequence, and an ice-tongs slaying, among others. (Also liked the purple-tinted transition scenes and the generally lurid color schemes.) While it falls a tad short of matching then-contempo scare classic _Peeping Tom_, this shares many of the same modern, media-themed touches.
