who would've thought? years of being tired of one's life, each other, the doubts, the routine, the loneliness...and all it took was some good old fashioned poontang. fuck the pain away! and let's be honest, who doesn't enjoy watching our elderly getting it on?

Tommy Lee Jones as a bumbling impotent middle aged man with sexual problems? Sign me the fuck up. Oh wait, what's this? We have lingering shots of Meryl Streep's mannequin like plastic surgery face gazing forlornly and over emoting in every scene instead. Ugh. The marital counseling premise seems interesting because of Jones but it's pretty light on the comedy despite the deceptive trailers. Carell is nearly a non entity in this. The film gets so serious it nearly drowns in its own schmaltz.

Would have fallen flat if its two leads didn't turn out subtle, yet stunning performances.

At its best when the director's hand is at its least noticeable and we just get to see Tommy Lee-Jones be curmudgeonly. The music choices are actively annoying.

Hope Springs is a decent movie that I really didn't enjoy. Streep and Jones carry the film with their honest portrayal of a couple in a sex-dead marriage. While the film may be sweet and occasionally humorous, as a 20-something I found it un-relatable, and not as fun as The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

If you ever need stubborn & angry in a film cast Tommy Lee Jones! He is perfect casting for this character. I was surprised how much I laughed during this film considering the serious subject matter. You really care about the lead couple's relationship and you hope they can work throug their issues. Steve Carell also delivers in a much different role then you would normally expect. You will feel almost every emotion during this film so I recommend watching.

I must have watched a different movie than everyone. It's completely over directed-- Frankel's use of pans and zooms in the therapy sessions undermine the acting and emphasize the crappy musical cues that pop up far too often. A sweet ending helps, but the film's atmosphere feels too clean for the story it tells.

I watched this for ornery Tommy Lee Jones and got a full serving. The caloric intake may be a little high but I won't need to eat again for a few years.

I admired how the actors shone, not in a grand drama, but in such an unassuming film as this.

The main problem with this awkward and borderline cringeworthy film is that it tries to sort out the serious intimacy issues of an older couple by means of pop psychology. And nothing could be more at odds with one another.

I was more interested in the movie playing in the cinema scene than in what was happening with the characters.

Streep and Jones do a nice job of defining the characters outside the marriage, giving everyone a little more depth with less exposition than a much weaker film might allow. I would have liked a few more scenes like this, especially since the movie feels just a bit short, a problem probably made worse by a resolution that feels much too abrupt.

Jones and Streep create an effective drama (not the comedy that the trailers promoted) about a troubled marriage. Both play their roles well, and Steve Carrell did well as the deadpan therapist.

Tommy Lee and Meryl sleep in separate bedrooms. Renowned couples/sex therapist Steve Carell tells them to stop doing that. They don't, and it's bad, then at the end they do, and it's good, and that's the movie. My mother said it was cute.

The film amounts to little more than extended therapy sessions with an emphasis on the discussion of sex. We get it... it's awkward because they're old. But actually the film more often than not blossoms because of how talented Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep are as actors, and they breathe authentic life into their characters. I recommend 'Hope Springs' solely on the strength of the two leading actors.

I love this movie! I laughed and cried. I cheered characters on. I just thought it was wonderful. Streep and Tommy Lee Jones were an excellent couple together and both did a fantastic acting job. I thought the writing was done really well and felt like something that could happen for real in any relationship. I think this movie should be required viewing for any young couple getting ready for marriage. This is one my 2012's finest movies so far. Just fantastic!

There was a moment, around ten minutes before the credits, where I found myself hoping the movie would end there and then, and I could tell the world that Hope Springs was actually one of the bleakest movies I'd ever seen, an unsung masterpiece, and the best American film of the year. That didn't happen, and without spoiling too much of anything, those final ten minutes left the movie on a far more upbeat note, but this movie still deserves a whole lot of credit. full review at Letterboxd

Don't let the poster or plot fool you. 'Hope Springs' is feel good comedy drama as it should be. Well written, a terrific cast (especially Tommy Lee Jones is outstanding), and some really hilarious jokes along the way. This is NOT 'Parterapi' in English!

A charming and funny romantic comedy that rises above its predictable script thanks to strong performances from Tommy Lee Jones and Meryl Streep. Jones gives one of his best performances to date as a husband who doesn't know how to reconnect with his wife of 31 years.

Nothing like what its ads suggest, this is a surprisingly honest & moving examination of the big problem of long-term love that plays & feels like a great indie. There r almost no laughs; instead this almost certainly holds the record 4 the number of uncomfortable & revealing silences in a major H'wood film. Credit must go 2 the leads, who not only do some of the most subtle acting of their careers, but surely must've battled a mountain of corporate hand-wringing 2 get this film released as is.

Meryl Streep and an incredibly hesitant Tommy Lee Jones go to get marriage counseling from Steve Carell. I'm not even sure I need to say any more - there was just no way it wasn't going to be a good film, and it's apparent from the very first scene. It's not perfect, but the two leads (particularly TLJ, being surprisingly hilarious aside the equally surprisingly straight-faced Carell) are just that spectacular.
