An evil ranch foreman tries to provoke a range war by playing two cattlemen against each other while helping a gang to rustle the cattle. Each cattleman blames the other for missing cattle. The first of the Hopalong Cassidy series, for which Boyd would return as star over sixty times, is a remarkably effective little western, with a zippy script, amicable performances and a fine, action-packed finale. Hayes’ silent death scene is also more moving than almost any other seen in the genre.

Hop-a-long Cassidy (1935), the first entry in.... yes, the Hop-a-long Cassidy series! A total of 66 movies was made of Hop-a-long starring William Boyd. 1935 was a pretty poor year for the western genre, so for me this movie easily takes the top spot as far as westerns go that year. A solid big studio B-movie production that's got it's action and personalities covered! Enough to never have time to get dull. What's funny is that they actually kills off 'Gabby' Hayes character in the first movie!
