Honor de cavalleria

In a way Cervantes' Don Quixote is a long odyssey of existential self discovery and the events are just means for that. The film does the same thing: it leaves the seemingly unimportant events aside and focuses on Quixote's moments of contemplation in an observationist attitude and captures some moments of illumination. A masterpiece of slow cinema.

Any intended significance largely failed to be conveyed to this viewer, and, if the aim was just to create a certain atmosphere, it didn’t seem very successful at that either. I’ll continue to prefer to take my cinematic Cervantes Kozintsev-style, thank you very much.

Serra's elegaic take on Don Quixote strips the classic novel so far back to its bare essentials that it's almost unrecognisable and thus potentially disrespectful, but what finally emerges is a contemplative vision of a long lost time whose meaning remains elusive until the final frame. It's an impressive no budget debut from Serra, and while it's clearly less technically accomplished than his other films, there is much to admire here for viewers on his emotional wavelength.
