This short follows the early career of actress Jane Barnes. She starts by doing extra work. After several months she is offered a studio contract (the “first step”). However, her work consists mostly of fashion shoots and bit parts that end up on the cutting room floor. She is even used as a stand-in for Maureen O’Sullivan on the set of a Tarzan movie when camera angles and lighting must be set up.

This is an oddity ... a 10 minute short about Jane Barnes, a real actress who had a string of mostly very small roles in the 1930's, getting a contract with MGM, but then struggling to get the break she needs to keep it. It's not clear to me if any of it is actually real, or exactly what the point was ... perhaps it's that people who stick with it with bloody minded determination can actually make it in Hollywood.
