What's this? An early D.W. short with a legible plot and relatively restrained acting? Yep, too bad it's insultingly racist though.

Griffith must think Uncle Tom's Cabin is a feel-good story.

This contains some of Griffith's best imagery to date (the battle, the house-burning with Claire McDowell in the foreground with her back to the camera, etc.). Unfortunately, it's also the beginning of a dumb, distasteful blackface saga that waxes sentimental about "the faithful devotion and self-sacrifice on an old negro servant" (though the worst of that comes in the next installment).

Ah, this is a complicated one. In its way, this kind of racism is even more insidious than Birth of a Nation's. But one can't deny the visual poetry of it, among Griffith's most expressive and painterly shorts. The cathartic last shot, one of Griffith's most understated and modern, is a highlight of the era.
