I had to pay through the nose for the collector's edition but I think it was worth with it as it came with a specially designed commemorative bullet proof vest to help the viewer survive all the rapid fire dialogue.

I really don't see how reporters yelling at each other over the phone is considered to be funny, and they just won't stop doing it. Grant plays an unsympathetic manipulator who makes the entire thing feel sour, and all the other characters are flat as paper and change personalities on a whim. Sociopathy, masquerading as patriarchal garbage, masquerading as comedy.

As a rule I don't care for overly-snappy dialogue, and the people here just won't shut up, plus the humor is very, very dated. Suffice it to say I was not at all entertained by this movie consisting of an assortment of blabbermouths with nothing remotely interesting to say.

The dialogue is amusing, sure, but the actual story is pathetic. The strong heroine turns into a simpering mess at the end and though he's charming, Grant's character isn't likeable. I really thought I was going to like this, but it's kinda awful.

So this must be the rapid-paced screwball comedy Howard Hawks that I had heard so much about, because I certainly don't recall the alien-carrot-monster-thing from "The Thing from Another World"(1951) slinging any sorts of witty quips like the ones sprayed about here. Despite thinking I wasn't exactly the biggest old school screwball comedy fan, this was surprisingly funny throughout, and it ended up being well worth the watch for me.

The jokes are good, Grant as always is on point and delivers a couple unexpected meta-jokes which are hilarious. It's well-paced, never feeling rushed despite the headlong sprint of the dialogue. And, despite softening the story the film FEELS full. It's a great experience. Multiple viewings will probably better showcase Hawk's direction, and maybe one day I'll get back to comment on that. There's just too much to take in on one viewing.

What an amazing film, even more so when you consider that it's nearly 70 years old. Grant and Russell deliver amazing natural performances, and the supporting cast is strong up and down. Unbelievably sharp, witty, lightning-paced dialogue that in spots feels and sounds almost modern. Some pretty impressive editing and camerawork for the time period as well.

Judging canon cinematic work can be tough when you have to consider both the work of art & what it influenced. For the latter, it is obvious that many rom-coms featuring determined, successful couples, owes a debt to this film. But for the former, there's nothing. The gimmicks of virtuoso dialogue & sound mixing grow tired fast. As does the outdated and problematic racism, red baiting, and gaslighting. The film is fine, but nothing worth going out of your way for. Marginal recommendation.

Move over, Aaron Sorkin, you'll never be able to top the word count of this script; the dialogue zips off the actors' tongues with multiple conversations often happening at the same time. It's a little hard to follow at points, but you just can't help but get caught up in the endless energy emanating throughout the relationship comedy, crime drama, and constant reporter antics (those phones!) of the screwball plot. Witty and well-edited, just with a hard-to-like ending (Walter was a real jerk).

Moves so fast, it pretty much moves right past me. Not dissimilar to the modern comedy films/TV shows I hate, there's only one sense of humour in this: snarky. It gets tiresome real quick and I have to try and situate myself in the tonally fucked story, which (again like the modern comedies) can't decide if it's overall going with comedy or drama, so fails at both. Along with the thoroughly haggard editing and some stiff acting, this wasn't fun.

Its cynicism is kinda remarkable (and usually feels well-earned) and scattershot, distributed toward the press, political authority, gender roles in general (but the institution of marriage in particular), and with its pace and general feeling of anarchy, HGF evokes a feeling: It's all about to come crashing down, and the only thing keeping it all together is the fast-talking charisma of a con man, a deluge of contradictory promises, and the sort of seduction of buying in.

Cary Grant is once again great, as is everyone else in the cast. Love the fast pace and the great dialogue. It's really funny too. I really don't know what's wrong with you if you don't like this movie but as Eric Rohmer said of Hawks: If one does not love the films of Howard Hawks, one cannot love cinema.

Has maybe three or four genuinely funny lines (as opposed to "charming" or "witty") and for such a dialogue vomit saturated film that is a poor ratio. I feel like this a subgenre-birthing classic so is held in high regard separate to its quality. I might be a moron though because I feel the same way about the Marx Brothers and a lot of other comedies from that era. Also Cary Grant's character is a fucking psychopath and we're supposed to be happy at that ending?

The fast talking style starts out as charming and humorous, but it turns grating halfway through, and completely ruins any enjoyment there is to find in the third act. My first Howard Hawks and quite a surprise, though not in a good way. I longed for something more; It struck me as aesthetically cold and surprisingly tedious but that's usually the case with play adaptations (A Streetcar Named Desire). Aaah, stop shouting! I was surprised at how pointed the comedy was, and how relevant alot of their comedic points still are, but this is a very "shouty" movie. It seemed like noone spoke at a level other than a dull roar for the last half an hour and I was just begging fro someone to take things down a notch before the big climax. That aside, you have great dialogue, ultra-charasmatic leads, fine directing. What else do you want? Oh, and..."Leave the rooster! It's a human interest story."

Completely redefines the term "quickfire dialogue." With almost 4 hours-worth of dialogue crammed into an hour and half, it moves at an exhausting pace, and while never giving you the time to laugh or react to any of the jokes, it still serves a solid dramatic arc with a decent, if limited critique on the ethics of journalism as well.

Russel and Grant are great and the dialogue is often very well written and witty. But, as is often the case with old movies, the ending leaves something to be desired. This is especially hurtful because Russel's usually strong character suddenly becomes a crying, submissive girl in the most unnatural way. The last 20 minutes weren't well written at all. Still, this film is influential and overall well done.

If I had to name the thing I enjoy most when watching an older, English-speaking movie it's when the dialogue gets fast and snappy. Well, this one is the perfect example as there is no slow scene and most of the time you get the entire room talking simultaneously; it's incredibly intoxicating especially through the addition of its cynical undertone. I had my fair share of laughs as it is on of the greatest comedies I saw so far.

So great I find I can overlook the fact that Ben Hecht was a disconcertingly active and vocal supporter of the most violent and fascistic edges of the Zionist movement in Palestine, the right-wing tendencies organised by people who openly talked about being influenced by fascism, who would rape, mutilate and murder their way through their inferiors in Deir Yassin to 'encourage' racially-inconvenient others to flee what would become their expanded Israel. Yep, overlooking. That's how good.

Compared to the 1931 film notice Hawks’ smooth blocking, and another team going over it means a lot is done more efficiently (e.g. how we learn of Williams’ escape). Instructive to see how these improvements amount to no improvement since Hawks is even less sure than Hecht what this story should say. Still unfunny; I don’t buy Grant in the role. True, Hollywood would roll back this level of women’s emancipation for decades, but it also softens the anti Red Scare stance while keeping the racism.

For being such a good movie, there are a lot of odd things that don't really add up. We have the oft-commented rapid-fire conversations that are headache-inducing. We've got a terrible "hero" in the newspaper editor, who steadfastly refuses to change while making others around him do so. The ex-wife bobbles from being fiercely independent to being played for a stooge. (Plus the completely random death scene!) Yet there's that charm and wit that will make me revisit this one.

It's definitely one of "those" "fast-talky" films…but if that's your thing this is as close to the best you'll get. Like all farces it's not satirical, but rather slightly conservative in timbre. He has a way of creating a fluidity between dialogue and physical movement that results in almost a dance that happens between the characters of the film. Banter comes thick, fast and witty, remarkable rhythms bouncing back and forth between talented actors. I love it. The story wrapped around the dialogue, I don't love so much. The social satire is enjoyably angry, but its fury sours into mean, omnidirectional cynicism. The love story crackles with chemistry - and possessiveness, manipulation, and Feminine Weakness(tm). It is possibly the greatest of the sublime comedies of remarriage made in Hollywood. Think of it as a game. They bicker, they swap insults, they fight - they are in love in the Hawsian world. Pretty good flick, I was really awe-struck by the great rapid-fire dialogue, sadly the ending with Russell's breakdown and acquiescence at the end seemed rather weak. Also, all that fast-talking can be a double-edged sword when the audience already knows where the conversation's going...it can be tiring. Same with the scheming: knowing what's to happen is often enough--we don't necessarily need to watch as each piece plays out.
