Every one of these people is delightful and interesting in their own ways, and all but the owner of the guest house strike me as struggling with some profound weight in their lives. Hong's mixing of the narrative undermines our sense of grasping the narrative with finality, even as it offers a modicum of hope (or not).

realistically hong's power is in the cumulative effect of multiple works, but this is quintessential and delightful and barely over an hour long; a perfect starting place for those who haven't had the pleasure.

Oh, the power of memory -- everyone talks in english, mostly confusing words among drinks and meals and walks, as this japanese looks for the woman he loves, also someone he considers the best person he knows. There he has an affair with the café owner, only to finally meet the girl he wants in the end -- but this works deeply, through crazy dialogues, as Sang-soo's tale about time and memory. It's mumblecore done right -- also, first Sang-soo I see that has no cinema-related characters.
