High Spirits

I once had a dream that I was Steve Guttenberg, and while visiting a styrofoam castle in Limerick with my yuppie wife, I fell in love with the ghost of Daryl Hannah after saving her from a ghostly stabbing by the ghost of Liam Neeson. Thank God it was only a dream...OR WAS IT!?

It's fittingly macabre and I rarely ask for more. Steve Guttenberg is always dealing with some kind of horror, here a ghost, before a robot in Short Circuit and even worse a baby. Poor guy.

I could watch this again not just for nonstop, imaginative zanyness but for the awesome cast! Steve Guttenberg is sweet and overly whipped by his wife, the type of screeching uber-bitch we don't see in movies anymore, played by Beverly D'angelo. Tilly, Gallagher...even Mr. Lawyer from Jurassic Park (Martin Ferrero) gets a cool role as a silly, skeptical yet then overzealous paranormal investigator. It's half baked looniness with an unbelievable cast. I had a ton of fun with this

Came out the same year as Beetlejuice and cost 2 million more. It doesn't even look like it cost 2 cents more. Chintzy production values galore; the castle set looks straight from The Three Stooges. Perhaps that was the intention, but it doesn't really matter when the results are this bad. Some of the ghost effects are passable, but they have nothing on Burton's innovations, or even other ghost films of the late 80's. Guttenberg is terrible, and O'Toole is on auto-ham. It's not funny either.

All of Jordan's shortcomings stuffed into one irritating, unfunny, painfully stupid package; the broad, juvenile comedy; the yelling and screaming in place of drama; the hysterically fluctuating tone. And none of his good qualities are there to balance it out. The romance between Hannah and Guttenberg is one of the worst things I've ever seen in a movie.

I think comedy as a genre serves poorly the stories presented by the film. A man accidentally manages to break a centuries long curse on a ghost he ends up falling in love with. But they are unable to consummate due to the fact that one entity is corporal and the other - isn’t. A priest, about to take his vow of abstinence, is tempted by a secular woman he meets by chance. I would have loved to see dedicated drama versions of each!

A bit too many screams in my taste at times, but kind of funny in a silly way. Not the movie of the year but different from some ghost movies. In death becomes her and Casper, similar elements happen, but I won't go as far as saying they took inspiration from this movie?

Despite Jerry Seinfeld man being among the worst actors of all time, I really enjoyed this movie.

I think people are being too hard on this. But I also tend to enjoy juvenile humor, yelling and screaming in place of drama and hysterically fluctuating tones.

What started off as a potentially fun, if not only mediocre, fantasy/rom-com quickly devolved into a bad comedy slog...right about the time Steve Guttenberg appeared on screen. His black hole of comedic acting alongside the farcical tone combined to create a void of "nomedy" that sucked up any and all entertainment the rest of the movie managed to muster up. On rewatch: the movie was just about as boring and disappointing as I remembered, but there is something quaint about the whole thing.

Haven't seen it lately, but it wasn't necessarily...bad, when I was younger. I'll need to watch it again...
