I really enjoyed the novel and thought the trailers looked good, but the material never quite gels together here. It hurries along, never letting character moments sink in before starting another montage or having compressed dialogue hit you over the head with its message. Because the material doesn't have time to breathe, the whole thing just becomes a 'people sure act crazy!' blur without making the viewer give a damn about any of it.

Vertical Snowpiercer: The Movie. We were having a discussion about whether Michael Fassbender and Tom Hiddleston should start remaking each other's movies just to see if anyone would notice. I think they might be able to at least switch superhero roles once. Luke Evans is a man-beast in this movie, embodying almost everything we ever came to love about 1970's Burt Reynolds.

It's been a long time since I got this little out of a movie. Is it supposed to be a satire on contemporary society? A display of nihilism? A dystopian future? Absurdism for the sake of absurdism? Whatever it tried to be, I sure didn't give a shit. The worst thing about it is the complete lack of pacing, making it impossible to predict the much anticipated end. Just like weather reports, cinemas should give an "apparent length", so that I can start avoiding movies that feel like 200+ minutes.

In one word: tedious. Considers itself very clever and socially poignant to such a degree that each over-stylised scene "becomes the architect of its own destruction" in terms of being a film with anything interesting to say. I wanted to take a long jump off a tall building well before the credits.

Weird and not always in a good way. Some great ideas, but it's just not good as a movie. And the whole mess makes no sense at all, some minor banal events lead to anarchy. Most of the actions of the people are based on, well, nothing. They just act. Many questions, no answers.

In style and visual terms this is really memorable, but aside from that there is little cohesion or clear purpose to this film. High Rise seems to start off being about social class in a very over played manner but devolves seemingly deliberately into something that was beyond my comprehension. Evans is a highlight but so much of this feels directionless so to me it was a disappointment

The social commentary in High-Rise is over-played and flawed. What's left is an over-stylised film with a decent soundtrack that includes reworked ABBA. That said, there are some interesting moments with strong performances all round, Nevertheless, the film is indulgent and over-long.

Speeds through its content without pausing for character or plot, leaving the viewer with little to care about. The heavy application of a style not befitting the material only further separates us from the story. What may have once been subtext has become a few ponderous lines of dialogue squeezed in between more montages. Too bad, because the material certainly had a lot of potential.

Hard to digest, but astonishing to watch. Hiddleston leads the way through this evidently dense and novelistic tale, with the supporting cast adding to the frenzy, along with the impressively lavish sets and cinematography. This is quite the wild party of a film that evokes an ambitious '70s kind of filmic sensibility (matching the '70s costumes and mustaches the characters sport).

I'm overstrained. This movies makes a lot of noise about almost nothing. It's a very superficial movie but it's aware of that, plays with that. But: Why? For what reason do you make such a movie that always shows of how in charge it is by not giving anything substantial away and than has nothing to offer to fill its self caused void. It's such a beautiful film at times and everything it activated in me was annoyance.

Expected to love this but didn't. It's ambitious, stylish, and accomplished in its execution but doesn't really seem to hit the mark. Pacing seems off with the plot accelerating towards chaos and then stagnating there. Meanwhile, the film seems as though it's bursting at the seams with the number of different characters it tries to contain, few of whom we ever meet for long enough to know enough about them.

A fascinating if messy film that feels like a 70s sci-fi combination of Brazil and A Clockwork Orange. Like several of Wheatley's other films, it is visually splendid but indecipherable when it comes to narrative. Also has some jumps in logic and plot holes that are rather jarring. But there is something irresistible about the madness of it all. Difficult to really pin down my feelings, but I enjoyed it even if it's deeply flawed. Some people are going to hate this film though.

This is a challenging one to review: I have huge sympathy for the material, so pre-armed with this background context I feel I can enjoy playing around comfortably in the swimming pool of imagery. Without this context I would probably need water wings and might be contributing to the yellowing of the pool.

Wheatley has proven that he can do some unique stuff already, but unique and good are not the same thing. With "High Rise" this is the first time he's done anything skirting quality entertainment, but I'm not quite sure he cares too much about entertaining people, as long as he gets the aesthetics. But I'll keep watching them as long as there's polyester.

This adaptation of Ballard seems to have a lot of potential, with its budget splashed on the screen as stars, sets and lavish parties. Sadly the outcome is quite shambolic. Wheatley can be one of the most incoherent directors working today - sometimes brilliantly so, but not in this case. After a little while the events of the plot start to make no sense and you quickly lose interest in the characters. Visually striking at times but poor storytelling and characterisation make this a stinker.

Social commentary about as blunt as a pizza oven brick, boxed in a shell as messy as the floor beneath an infant greedily devouring spaghetti after learning she has been weaned off the teat, and delivered with a story about as soft and hollow as thrice-boiled cannoli. By the end, though, that dog looked pretty tasty. Mangia mangia!

I lost concentration for a moment and when I turned back to the movie, everybody had gone insane and they were eating their pets. You could claim that it's my fault for not paying enough attention, but this is my review and so I'm going to blame the movie for not setting the plot up properly. Reminded me of Snowpiercer, another movie that failed to find a proper balance between being surreal and believable.

It's rare to find a movie this asinine & ridiculous. The music & sound might be really good if the accompanying action & dialog were not so unbearably disjointed. The constant confusion & metaphorical symbolism makes it overwhelmingly frustrating & tedious. Every performance is overacted. It is a complete overload of action & drama without a coherent plot to explain the insanity. I couldn't wait for this pathetic, incredibly lame movie to end. Entirely forgettable.

What a pile of steaming trash. It was similar to Snowpiercer with the idea of living spaces and resources set apart by social classes, but it just goes straight into Weirdoland so fast and it seems like it's trying to do too much to be so damn artistic. Pushes the agenda right into your face too much, not enough happening here despite the movie attempting to be shocking with sex and sexual abuse. You couldn't figure out anything else to lace this story with, really?

It's certainly very artful. My problem is the big, overhanging question of: how is the outside world worse? I get there is an allegory and so on happening, I don't get why characters don't just leave. I feel like either I'm missing the point or the film doesn't shape the story well enough. Overall, a disappointment.

Biased by having just finished the book, but thought this was a real misfire. The pacing is terrible; the descent into barbarism is mostly set to montages, whereas the way it disintegrates in stages is one of the most compelling things about the source. Feels like all the subtext is missing, and things have been lifted from the book just to be used as props. The modernism and casting held up at least (Jeremy Irons and Luke Evans were good choices). Wheatley is better without a big budget.

Visually and stylistically this movie is absolutely stunning. The art direction and score are flat out impeccable. Hiddleston, Evans, Irons, and well pretty much everyone give top notch performances. Unfortunately though, the actual substance of the movie is either entirely too convoluted and hidden behind endless droves of allegory or simply put nonexistent. Basically the film ends up being extremely good for what it is, but at the same time it also had the potential to be even better.

What's curious about High Rise is that there's no real, crucial inciting incident that leads to the collapse of the sealed-off society; it's gradual, almost arbitrary, how quickly things turn to shit. And while that makes it feel a bit thin, it compensates with inspired design (owing much to Gilliam) and perfectly deadpan, absurdist dialogue ("They're raping people they shouldn't now!"). It also features the most memorable opening scene in a while.

Viewed December 8, 2016. Nervy and intense; the best worst party you'll ever attend. There's no real structure to speak of (in fact, it jettisons the very idea of a second act entirely, in a bold and exciting montage), so the joy comes in the details, and there are some great ones - Tom Hiddleston's dancing, the carefully sculpted 70s architecture, the many appropriations of ABBA's "SOS." If you're on board, it's a decadent blast.

As a socio-political satire it isn't nearly as smart as Wheatley obviously thinks it is (although to be fair, having never read the novel this could very well at least in part be Ballard's fault), it's ultimately an empty exercise in slick, stylish nihilism more than anything. That said, between this and Sightseers (the only other Wheatley film i've seen), the director's visual sensibility has improved enormously, even if it isn't necessarily distinctive, which makes it easier to watch.

In the 70s, a doctor (Tom Hiddleston) moves into a state-of-the-art high-rise, but issues both technological and sociological gradually turn life for its residents into a feral nightmare. Wheatley again proves his skill as a visual filmmaker, with marvelous imagery throughout (the superb design helps), and the acting is very solid indeed...but as in A FIELD IN ENGLAND, Wheatley and screenwriter Amy Jump find cohesive storytelling somewhat out of their grasp, and the themes seem a hair outmoded.

As a biting form of social commentary that's even more relevant now than it was when the novel was written in 1975, High-Rise is a fascinating, thrilling, and darkly humorous piece of filmmaking. It's stylish, angry, and very entertaining. It's always got multiple elements working, it's got a fascinating cast of characters portrayed by excellent actors, and it's purposeful - even if it's not particularly subtle about it. High-Rise deserves the penthouse suite.
