Romance, Comedy
1h 53m
In this biting romantic comedy, Rob Gordon (Cusack) is the owner of a semi-failing record store in Chicago, where he sells music the old-fashioned way -- on vinyl. His needle, however, skips the love groove when his long-time girlfriend, Laura (Hjejle), walks out on him. As he examines his failed attempts at romance and happiness, the process finds him being dragged, kicking and screaming, into adulthood. (Touchstone Pictures)

Cusack's character is a completely self-centred jerk to the point of frustration. If you enjoy watching people attempt to be self appointed elitests then by all means watch this. There are quite a few humourous bits here and there. But in an attempt to deconstruct the complexities of relationships it just shows how much projection someone can use instead of accepting responsability to their actions. Maybe that was the point but either way it's frustrating to watch.

Rob Gordon is an utterly loathsome human being and, quite frankly, the film would have benefited immensely had he realized all of the ways in which he is a total asshole. Unfortunately, when the film ends Rob is only marginally better human being who is still totally unaware of what a raging misogynist he is, and his arc feels unfinished. That said, Cusack is perfect in the role and somehow manages to be just charming enough to keep you invested. Overall it is enjoyable, just not satisfying.

Ya know, i really didnt get it. It was a bit boring, actually. Some good bits ;a overall quirky and clever script (but a lot probably came from the source material) with good performances and a great soundtrack yet something was missing. Maybe im just not entertained by all the breaking up and getting together stuff , whada ya call that... romantic? Comedy? Ew!

Having read the book first I couldn't help but feel let down. The music references were good and John Cusack played a strangely American Rob well, but there was just something about it that didn't quite click. Maybe it was the moving of the setting from London to Chicago(?) or the fact that the record store was way to big in my opinion which didn't work but overall it was enjoyable and entertaining. A good laugh and sweet moments, not bad overall.

A score this high should imply Fidelity is some kind of cinematic masterpiece, and I'm the first to admit, it's not. I just can't score one of my all-time favourites any lower than this. Bitterly sardonic like only the recently dumped can be, the script captures Hornby's voice perfectly, and does so by constantly breaking the fourth wall. Transplanted from the UK, Chicago itself becomes a character. Great performances, great everything. Tops Swingers as the ultimate guy rom-com. Love it.

It tries to dazzle you with endless high-brow musical references a-la Beefheart and the voice-over narration thinks it's really clever. Underneath, it has a rather dull, juvenile plot about relationships.

Here's what I'd argue about High Fidelity: it knows that its main character is a self-centred jerk. The story of exploration isn't so much to validate a jerk's immature, reactionary feelings, but to watch him sort through them and take stock of who he is and what he wants. Structurally, he's still learning when the film fades out. And it's a difficult subject to nail because this kind of introspection never stops. But despite the heavy narration, this is a witty look at insecurity.

Top badass moment? Dick plays a bit of "Suspect Device" by Stiff Little Fingers and gets a girlfriend. If it was really that easy I'd have had more ladies than Hugh Hefner. (Or Fidel Castro's 35,000, if you believe what you read in The Sun.) Any movie featuring any SLF music is automatically badass. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Rob Gordon is examining his past relationships in order to find out where his current one went wrong. Rob owns a record shop where he sells vinyls. this film is any music lovers dream, they have random top fives and indie music playing constantly. Cusack is a bit dodgy in his peformance, his jokes not always being the best or at all interesting. I enjoyed the novel one of the best I have ever read and I really just liked the simplicity and how everything in Robs life is made into a top 5 list.

I like that this movie doesn't try to make itself out to be really smart or deep. It's just a good story with good characters and offers a mixed bag of emotions. It's funny, sad, touching, warm (and yet, real) all at the same time. I also think it does justice to the book, which is a rarity.

Hilariously melancholy and relatable comedy about how we deal with love and loss and the pop culture we bind our wounds with. It lost me just a bit in the final act (I would have preferred, spoiler, if had Rob and his girlfriend not gotten back together - isn't that more like real life?), but it's still one of the best romantic comedies ever. No movie has ever used Jack Black's trademark "Jack Black" character to better effect.

John Cusack as a pathologically misogynistic beta male was pretty fun to watch. Sadly, a lot of dorks took after this film like the idiots that doubled down on whiteytude and became full-on racist skins after seeing American History X. A pretty good lesson on how to do a monologue, almost a one man show. If it were a one man show I would give like a 95. Unfortunately, everyone else (except Joan Cusack and the woman that played Laura) seemed to get in the way.

As a longtime collector of music and romantic comedies, it appears I am the target audience. I find the exploration of record store culture and the insights into music snobbery incredibly engaging and very funny. However, the romantic storyline is lacking and does not resonate. If the story emphasized the music aspect more, then it could have been great.

This is a really amiable and likeable movie. The characters feel extremely real ... anyone who's hung around used record stores knows these people. It's well cast. Cusack is particularly well cast. In his prime, he can be mopey and sad, but still likeable. You want him to get his shit together. I read this book decades ago and this is a really fine adaptation.

A very "beta" masculine take on the romantic comedy that too often wants sympathy for a lead who doesn't accept his own responsibility and is angry at women (and the world in general). An early take on a world obsessed with "top 5/10 lists" that is at times inspired and irritating and is more about the experience of life rather than romance

Rob is an insufferable jerk, and that's why this film is so great. His problem is himself and he doesn't seem to realize that. He and his friends talk about lists and about how what you consume defines you more than who you are and it's so damn relatable it had me on the verge of tears. Then, things seem to work out for Rob without Rob really having done anything at all. The movie ends on an up note and I'm left a bit disappointed. Really good movie that could have been great.

High Fidelity is one of the few rom-com's that alternatively feels aimed towards men rather than women. I'm not usually a big John Cusack fan but he's perfectly cast here, he carries the film effortlessly and he gives arguably his best performance. Jack Black is hilarious also and his character here shares many similarities with his character from 'School of Rock'. It's by no means laugh out loud, but there's many humorous moments and overall this is a really pleasant, chilled and easy watch.

Although it has a good soundtrack I feel the lead character, while obviously changing for the better as the film goes on, comes across as too unlikable (though certainly not unrelatable) to really carry my attention - though John Cusack, to his credit, tries very hard. A good supporting cast of characters helps the film as well, as does it's excellent use of Chicago to give variety to the many, many monologues delivered to the camera. Overall though, it just feels a little too pedestrian.

The kind of dry comedy I've come to expect from John Cusack since seeing Grosse Pointe Blank. Nothing really laugh-out-loud, but you'll find yourself chucking on the inside. If you don't like non-mainstream music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, you probably will be annoyed, as Stephen Frears does his best to show us that his taste in music is hipper than yours.
