As the teenage bus conductress O-Koma, Takamine might best be described as beatification personified, and it is her continuously cheerful demeanor that effectively masks the film's underlying current of satirical bitterness. (Slant Magazine)

A fun light-hearted and fast paced dramedy. This was a very pleasing watch and put me in a good mood.

Mikio Naruse's Hideko the Bus Conductress (1941) starts out promising taking a few pages from one of my favorite films Arigato-san (1936) with it's rural bus ride. But instead of continuing in that humble thread, it turns into a instructional video on business professionalism.

Notable as the first screen collaboration, released a few months before the start of WWII, of Mikio Naruse with one of Japanese film's greatest leading ladies, Hideko Takamine.

"A deceptively light-hearted comic confection." - Keith Uhlich
