The first half, filled with marital issues that lead to a whole lot of martial arts and cultural misunderstandings, wasn't that attention-grabbing. The second half, filled with martial arts that lead to a whole lot of cultural understandings, was friggin' great. Gordon Liu proves (once more) he is truly one of the greats, and the grand array of weaponry and fighting styles is wonderful. The absence of deaths and revenge makes this the first feel-good martial arts film I've seen.

And I regarded Legend of the Drunken Master as the top of the genre..."War of the Roses" leads to cultural martial arts crisis, hilarious. As good as it gets.

Gordon Liu's a great leading man who puts to work his vast knowledge of martial arts and athleticism. The situation is great and serves up a more than satisfying amount of action, with plenty of variety. Anyone of any age could watch this movie and not have to be told to leave the room or cover their ears, while it still gives you a meaningful experience without compromising a level of enjoyment.

Some of the best martial arts sequences I've ever seen. By the end of the movie you're exhausted.

Goofy haircut aside, Gordon Liu kicks ass. This flick is one of his very best. This is the only kung fu movie I can think of where no one dies and everyone is friends at the end.

A film that exemplifies some of the core factors of martial arts: bettering yourself and understanding other forms of battle. Amazing choreography with great display of physical skill, jokes that land and a fascinating look at the variety of fighting styles of China and Japan. Unbelievably good from beginning to end. Watch it. Right now.

Waives the Shaw Brothers’ (especially Chang Cheh’s) easy charms of a high body count, plentiful blood and crazy racism in favor of a shockingly respectful portrayal of the Japanese, complex and relatively down to earth choreography and a mixture of duds and actually funny cultural jokes. And I dare anybody to call the last twenty minutes anything less than awesome. Takes a while to get going and Yuka Mizuno could have gotten a bit more to do, though.

Highly entertaining tournament style Kung Fu flick. It looks like the Shaw brothers spared no expense, showcasing a large variety of Chinese and Japanese styles.

I adore that it pits armed and unarmed Chinese martial arts against Japanese, showcasing Jap weapons and styles (kendo, karate, nunchuks, sai, ju-jitsu, ninjitsu, kusari-gama and more) with due respect, and it's refreshing to see sports fighting in a wuxia (though heated and with lethal weapons) rather than a blood feud, but why do they all have to lose to Gordon Liu? And the writing is abominable. The fights are top notch, but every time someone opens their mouth the film takes a hit.

One of the best martial arts films. Lots of different styles and excellent fight scenes.

Silly. Completely silly but some very decent fight scenes. Gotta forget about the cheesyness a bit and enjoy. I liked this movie.

Not much of a story here, but the action is top-notch.
