In colonial Australia, James Morrison is a young teamster who has two friends, Long and Short. He is betrothed to Jane Judd when he visits Sydney and meets fiery Irish girl Biddy O'Shea, who is just off the "wife ship" - a boatload of women from an Irish orphanage bought out to Australia. James is attracted to Biddy and promises to marry her. James returns to Bathurst to break the news to Jane, but his mother dies and makes James promise to marry her daughter. (imdb)

The photography is impressive, more specifically the footage shot on location (admittedly some of which seems to be stock footage), and the story is sufficiently engaging. The musical numbers are also quite fun. However, the acting of Franklyn Bennett really stifles the film; he is totally unconvincing as a rogue-come-pioneer. He went straight from Sydney amateur theatre to this film, and it shows.

The Australian Heritage (1935), an ambitious feature from down under. But regardless of how ambitious and inspiring it's supposed to be, Australia didn't exactly have the most equipped movie industry in the 1930s, nor the big name actors to really pull it off. Becomes only a curio that takes itself and it's message too seriously, with acting which doesn't impress very much.
