Okay. Okay... okay...... okay. SO! HERE'S THE THING ABOUT GRAPHIC NOVEL MOVIES LIKE THIS ONE! I don't care that there were some kinda-sorta-interesting secondary characters. I don't care that the 3D wasn't useless. I don't care that The Rock was actually decent. I'll just come out and say it, this movie is fucking stupid. I know it shouldn't bother me so much. But this movie hurt my feelings it was so bad. Movie adaptations of graphic novel adaptations of historical myths need to be stopped.

It isn't remarkably well shot, acted, or written, but it's a solid film nevertheless. Unlike many modern swords-and-sandals epics, Hercules doesn't rely on CG foes, sex, or unnecessarily complicated plots to fill its muscled torso. Rather, it just passes enjoyably and without (too much to) question. Dwayne Johnson looked amazing.

Better than most sword and sandal shit that has come out along the last few years. But still: Ratner's lack of imagination depends too much on The Rock's charisma - who almost saves it all.

Despite being circa 50 per cent training montage, this was better than expected. The light tone and novel focus on the power of propaganda made it easily digestible.

Yeah, no. It's an okay popcorn movie. But it could have been something more, if it had dared to be either a huge fullblown fantasy movie or actually develop the concept of hero vs. myth. As it is, it ends up being entertaining enough but forgotten even before the credits roll.

There's something that just feels bland about it despite some decent supporting performances and a reasonably interesting, if undercooked, premise. It just tries so hard to have fun, and succeeds in occasional moments, but the writing is just passable, both the dialogue and narrative.

I'll preface this by saying I quite enjoy Dwayne Johnson as an actor. I thought the concept of Hercules post the legend and the debunking of mythology were neat ideas. However, all that we are left with is a run of the mill sword-and-sandals reinterpretation of the 13th warrior. While this film isn't necessarily bad, it is treading water, failing to provide anything new or engaging.

No matter how you parse these spiritual musings, there's no getting around Hercules' sexual allusions and flirtations with nudity. Or its wall-to-wall tapestry of blood and violence. Or its profanities. Plus, let's be honest: The movie just isn't very good. Hercules, the Western world's first über-buff superhero, has been the subject of many a movie, and likely will be for many more. The guy's legacy is as wide as his shoulders. But this particular tale will be--and should be--quickly forgotten.

Brett Ratner is still a fat talentless hack but this is somewhat salvaged by the Rock. Hercules' merry band of rogues are the usual rehashed archetypes. The action scenes (aside from the bow scenes) aren't really that creative or interesting. The dialogue sucks for the most part. There's also all sorts of illogical plot holes such as when Hercules suddenly has enough "magic" armor around to equip an entire army. Where did he get all this shit? Does anyone care? I sure didn't.

Trying to put the tragic deaths of his wife and children behind him, Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) agrees to fight for the Thracian King Cotys (John Hurt)--but there is more to this particular assignment than he realizes. A refreshingly lean story, told in a manner maximizing badassery and minimizing convolution. Surprisingly well-written, with humor that feels organic, and generally well-acted, with Ian McShane's casually morbid seer a particular highlight. Johnson does not lack for gravitas.

Shield Wall: The Movie. But seriously, did I just watch a movie where Hercules teaches Thracians how to form a shield wall like Romans? For real?? This is how they turn a mythological character into a "realistic" historical figure? By blatantly screwing history in the ass? For real??

Awesome stuff--I saw it with a big audience, and everybody was hooting and hollering and yee-hawing at all the right places. The cast is great, the script sets just the right tongue-in-cheek tone, and maximum kickassery is achieved and maintained throughout. Colorful and anachronistic and funny, and it has the whole three-act "hero redeemed!" structure working for it. It's fun, guys. I had fun at HERCULES and I am not ashamed.

That was easy to browse through. Peter Mullan and Rebecca Ferguson were nice to see, but Joseph Fiennes was too gay for my taste. Karolina Szymczak was the mother of Hercules. The humour was ridiculous. I did not know they've got so good dental hygiene during Hercules times.

Ian McShane is good, Rock going smash on some bad dudes is good, the rest... not so good. Ugly as sin, but the story (helped a great deal by this films take on the Hercules mythology) is functional enough to support the silly violence. I was reasonably entertained.

This was obviously never meant as any sort of drama piece, so I would have cut the child-killing plot threads straight out and amped up the humor. Loved Rufus Sewell's quips and wanted 2000% more of them. The beast killing action was fantastic and interesting (5% of the action sequences), the bits with soldiers screaming and waiving their spears was intellectually incredibly boring and visually tedious (95% of the action sequences). Watch the Scorpion King instead.

In a vacuum, 2014's "Hercules" was a pretty decent movie. It was fun, it was action packed, it had it's share of laughs, and it had The Rock and Ian McShane, they had some good chemistry. But by the time "Hercules" saw the light of day, the market was flooded with your 300's, Clash of the Titan's, Pompeii, you name it. The market was tired, we were all tired of ancient Greece/Rome. "Hercules" was a perfectly competent movie, entertaining for the duration, it just came out at the wrong time.

The Rock was rocking out in this mythical action film. I thought that the cast had some great chemistry and I thought it had some really funny writing. Comedy I feel like is essential to a good action film, to break up the action sequences. I thought that Ian McShane stole the show as he kept prophesying that he would be killed by a flaming weapon. I also thought that Ingrid Berdal was a beautiful Amazon woman who would put Hawkeye to shame with her bow and arrow skills...

With Hercules, Brett Ratner and Dwayne Johnson are out to entertain you -- no more, no less. And that is just what they do. Based on the graphic novel by Steve Moore, Brett Ratner's Hercules (boy, we love typing those three words) aims to show us the real Greek hero: the man rather than the demi-god, the truth rather than the legend. Yet this is no grim, gritty, 'Nolanized' rethink of the popular ancient myth.

Poor Rocky. He had a better chance of getting Philadelphia to cheer Roman Reigns than helping this become a good movie. Like in Philly, he tried admirably but couldn't pull it off, and like in Philly, we feel bad for him here. This is another attempt to demyth a legendary figure (see: Robin Hood, King Arthur), and it falls flat. You want centaurs? In this film, they're faker than A-Rod. Nemean Lion? It probably was a stuffed animal, dummy. And why is the evil king named Coitus?

While the script could have been written by a 10 year old, it provides for an entertaining enough movie. Ratner does nothing for this, as The Rock carries this movie on his shoulders. The supporting cast could have been played by better actors and written better. Truly, I blame Ratner for this movie as it could have been better than it was. Thankfully however, this was no Legend of Hercules.

Hercules is a mediocre action movie that's pretty much what you would expect from a movie teaming up Dwayne Johnson and Brett Ratner in an adaptation of a Hercules graphic novel. It's got lots of action, a few laughs, some strong visuals, and a charismatic lead ... all serving a poor story, uninteresting characters, and a whole lot of nothing that functions as the rest of the movie. It's mediocre, and for some people, that's enough.

The Rock is a guilty pleasure of mine - as is WWE - so I'm still watching pretty much everything he's in. Most basic storytelling devices are at work here so what you expect is pretty much what you get. There are a couple exciting sequences and the action is shot decently. However, this is still a Brett Ratner blockbuster film so it's not anything special.

Well, first things first: Compared to the Renny Harlin/Kellan Lutz Hercules joint that came out back in January, this is a motherfucking lost David Lean film. Viewed by itself, it's a little mediocre - this is Ratner, after all - with fairly generic battle sequences that grind on unimpressively. But it does have the Rock's charisma, John Hurt, Ian McShane, and a couple neat action scenes. Watch it with Pompeii for a mediocre-but-watchable-2014-ancient-Greek-action-flicks film festival.

I watched the movie because I tend to at least enjoy Dwayne Johnson's performance if nothing else, however this movie doesn't even give him a chance to shine. Aksel Hennie (Tydius) is a norwegian like me so that's the only reason I went to see it but i'm glad I did! It was suprisingly good. There were no myhological creatures which I find weird because Hercules is a mythological character.. I actually think that made the movie better this way! Aksel Hennie played great, even tough he said on word the whole movie :)

I was pleasantly surprised by the film, after I heard that the Rock was headlining this with Ratner directing. The action pieces are solid, and thoroughly entertaining.
