It only takes two scenes before it's clear this is low-rent entertainment - taking a highbrow horror conceit and turning the Puzzle Box into a Big Mac box (literally) for the consumption of the masses. This was confirmed by unnecessary CGI, an uncomfortably emotional Pinhead, and a cenobite DJ spitting killer CDs. I shit you not.

Gets rid of the disturbing, making-you-feel-uncomfortable moments and trades them in for ridiculous developments and terrible characters. Oh, and I guess Pinhead is now both a statue and a senseless killing machine? Ugh.

The acting is laughably bad, as is the writing, but the FX are decent at least. Almost entirely abandons the mythos that the last two movies created.

Quite honestly the most insanely bad thing ever. It's the worst, most simultaneously cheap-looking and mindlessly-blockbustery of the Hellraisers. And NYC has apparently only 9 residents, which is interesting.

Better than the 2nd by a clear mile. It strived to do something different while still holding onto the things that make it Hellraiser in the first place. I love the personality split for Pinhead and the last shot of the film. Some great stuff there

The art / night world is a great setting for a Hellraiser tale but they cocked it up. The story's weak and the special effects team aren't up to the task. Why they decided to give Pinhead a backstory and redemption arc ... This entry loses its erotic, creepy edge toward the end and goes fully bombastic. At one point, the protagonist runs through a street full of dangers and I couldn't help but imagine a Looney Tunes backing track. There's so much wrong with this movie but it's still watchable.

If you're not an OCD completionist like me, stop with the Hellraiser franchise after this. 3 is a big step down from the first two films but is still watchable in a ridiculous sense, something that cannot be said for anything that follows.

Less of a repulsive freak show than the previous entries, this feels more modestly budgeted (with accordingly modest aspirations) but is far more cleverly staged and executed, with a more coherent storyline than usual, and undercut by a winningly absurd (even silly) sense of humour; highlighted by the tongue-in-cheek nightclub massacre. No great stretches required from the performers, though Farrell is a likable heroine.

Quite a bit more fun than I remembered. Maybe that's just me and my mindset for it this time though, because while the script feels like it's motioning towards the campy-horror-franchise-sequel everything on-screen is presented completely seriously. Even if the lines aren't great I like Doug Bradley having more dialog and screen-time. Quite a drop off from the first two but I enjoyed it this time, and it's still much better than any that came after.

Hellraiser 3 is a mockery of Clive Barker, Pinhead, and the Cenobites. It features annoyingly absurd characters with shallow motivations and no satisfying story. The major sin, however, is the treatment of Pinhead. This movie ruined Pinhead as a controlled killer. He's scareless, like Freddy Kreuger in later Nightmares.

Pinhead officially turns into a Freddy Krueger type figure in this instalment, and like the second film it ramps up the silliness to an absurd degree, but at least the story is relatively focused this time, which makes it more watchable. The acting is crappy, but that just comes with the territory. The film looks good and there is plenty of gore to satisfy fans with low expectations and standards. The mythology behind the box evidently goes a long way.

Fans keep saying this franchise "follows its set of rules" but I have yet to see one of these that didn't have me thinking "But wait, I thought..." at LEAST once. This does add to each sequel's unpredictability, which is the franchise's strong suit. Unlike slasher films, each sequel, so far, has delivered a significantly different & more expansive take on the Hell/Pinhead mythos. This one feels more conventional w/ its overt Good Vs Evil narrative & at times like ur watching a humorless Freddy.

I can see how it would be hard to build a series out of what the first two movies set up, so it's understandable that this is an awkward sequel. Understandable, but still awkward. Pinhead's motivations throughout the whole movie are never really clear, just that he's evil and he wants to torture and/or kill everyone in the world I guess. He's practically like the djinn in Wishmaster in this movie, but just killing a bunch of people instead of having the whole wish-granting twist.

As opposed to the surreal psycho-terror of Clive Barker we're faced with your ordinary horror pulp meets an angry screaming Pinhead. I do hope in the next Hellraiser, they'll introduce a Heaven--then angels can do battle with Pinhead and all will be C-movie horror schlock instead of truly disturbing art.

After the eventually pointless first sequel, this is redundant to the point it's not worth having a deeper review on - one of many sequels in existence that was cobbled together sloppily for commerce only. When your biggest ideas include a Cenobite who throws CDs like razor-sharp Frisbees, who belongs to a parody not a sequel to a serious first film, and can't even make that work the whole product falls to pieces.

We get lots of Pinhead and some great imagery in the church and elsewhere, but he becomes a completely different character here, as if he realized that he was competing with Freddy all of the sudden. Even though there is more killing, the gore is for the most part poorly done and outright silly in places. The new cenobites are unimaginative designs - the writer just looked around his house for things to embed in people's faces. There is no "cube keeper" in this one, which made me sad.

the characters are simply horrible, and acting is about as bad. in spite of it's failings in pretty much every aspect this still churns out the scary moments, cheap thrills, and great gore that you would expect from barker based films. pinhead's always been one of my favorite villains, but sadly he doesn't have the screen time to reciprocate my appreciation.

Cub reporter (and intrepid Gothic heroine) is hankering after a hot story when she witnesses a man explode on a hospital gurney, with electrified chains standing straight out from his body. Surely there must be a story there. Not much of a one, as it turns out, but a lot more explosions and mayhem and sticky-icky. Paula Marshall has some nice moments as a throwback to a Sixties go-go dancer.

"For all the blasphemies and British accent, Pinhead is just a sub-Freddy goon, and the ambiguities and perversities Barker is so fond of have been neatly tidied-up. This is the sort of picture teenagers in malls in Akron, Ohio might understand - a good horror sequel, and that's all."

This forgoes much of II's sinister surrealism but provides Pinhead with far more of a showcase. What the pic lacks in plot invention is more than compensated for by lots of colorful carnage, completely with some effectively revolting FX work (courtesy of Bob Keen). Especially impressive are a club-set slaughterfest with a mega body count and a scene that sees a Pinhead victim instantly filleted before our very eyes.

Like the vast majority of horror movie series, Hellraiser is at this point starting to decline. Taking the controlled pinnhead and tuning him into a sort of infernal standup comedian with a tendency to kill pretty much anyone he feels like killing in between 10 and 20 seconds. The plot is somewhat more coherent than the second one, but alas, the feel of Hellraiser 1 is gone.

While Hellraiser wasn't exactly a masterpiece and Hellraiser 2 wasn't terribly amazing either (although compared to the first film it's a good sequel) this film is just bad. The rules set in the first two films, which is what made them somewhat enjoyable for me, are broken. Pinhead is now your typical super natural demon. Not to mention there are so many simply awkward scenes where our heroine runs around or pauses while someone or something looks menacingly at her. Very poor.
