Hello, Sister!

Simple 'girl meets boy' and they fall in love. To the point and full of enthusiasm. The end comes a little rushed and not as well thought-out as the beginning, but that's what happens when you take the original director and his vision and change it with another. The infamous Erich von Stroheim was kicked off yet another film. Shame he was so difficult to work with. He had an eye for greatness, and seemingly got so much out of so little here.

Very simple in every possible way but a well-balanced totality in pacing, acting and cinematography. Would've rather seen the original von Stroheim version, though.

It's hard to say what this *might* have been. A relatively mature script was first "punched up" by Stroheim with any number of rumored elements that get more outré with each telling... before the whole was awkwardly shoehorned into a more standard romantic comedy formula by the unhappy studio, mostly reshot. The result is the most monstrously reprehensible "buddy" in the history of swell Coney Island date movies. Tragically, Will Stanton's painfully unfunny drunk act survives the ordeal intact.
