Escalante asks: what's left of us after these brutal acts? Almost nothing, as Heli wants revenge -- and gets it -- and still struggles with his rude sexuality. From the very first travelling -- poor young men in the back of a Elite Squad SUV --, this is pure cinematic vomiting. Better stick to A Touch of Sin and Diaz's North, also presented at Cannes 13.

An impressive, gripping and traumatically bleak experience. This film puts you into the protagonist's shoes in textbook fashion, leaves you rooting for him, and only beats you up again and again for your faith. Powerful stuff and maybe too nihilistic for some. But also a perfectly made film in terms of look, feel, setting, casting, sound design and camerawork. A film which deserves most of the plaudits it has received.

Yet another so grim it hurts social realist drama about the drug trade. Wake me up when you have something new to say or can do it without resorting to the usual tropes.
