The first act felt like Beatty just stitched together some ideas on the fly, complete with some poor production. Then Charles Grodin entered, and Beatty cut loose in the second act. Things got fun. Some comedy mixed with some heart. Then the third act left me scratching my head with some of the choices that were made, and lack of Grodin. I really wanted the landing to stick, but it didn't. All in all, it's fine - a half-hearted recommendation.

I usually like Beatty, or at least find him tolerable (though I don't really know why), however I thought this film was rather bad. Aside from being a generally dull film with a boring script, the acting all around is lazy and uninspired. I didn't really know my mother, but apparently this was one of her favorite films. I'm bemused. I was looking for insight, and I certainly didn't get any after watching this.

Took the movie "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" and moved it into the '70s.

A smart enough treatment of the material, and consistently funny. Vastly overrated by that Academy that gives movie awards, tho.

HEAVEN CAN WAIT straddles the line between '70s auteur-driven filmmaking and polished Hollywood product that contains stirrings of the high-concept silliness that would define studio comedies in the decades to come. It's rather goofy and often gets distracted in search of its overall goal, but the casual zaniness of its script and the charisma of Beatty hold things together.

Middling Beatty star vehicle was a big hit in its day due to his fame, but it hasn't really stood up. As expected, Beatty managed to work his liberal politics into this remake of Here Comes Mr.Jordan, but it's presented in a wishy washy manner and is therefore a far cry from the more acerbic approach of Bulworth 20 years later which was sparked by disillusion. Beatty/Henry's direction is purely functional, and the script is a case of too many cooks with contrary styles.

Decent remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan. Beatty is great, a definite improvement over Montgomery, and the core of the story is the same and works pretty well, but nearly every little change is either a wash or makes the story a bit worse. Nothing major, but this is missing some of the spark in the dialogue and the characterizations of the originals.

A throwback to the high-gloss screwball comedies of the 1940s, Heaven Can Wait beguiles with seamless production values and great comic relief from Charles Grodin and Dianne Cannon.

I guess it isn't much more than a romantic comedy, but it does romantic comedy extremely well. It's funny, never drags and has a cast full of comedic talent. It's just so likable.

How did this get nominated for 9 Oscars? HEAVEN CAN WAIT is, as a piece of cinema, flatly shot and blandly directed. The script is only witty in flashes, and the acting is unremarkable; the nominations for Jack Warden and Dyan Cannon must rank among the least-deserved in Oscar history, while Charles Grodin, who gives the funniest, most sure-footed performance, was ignored. Most of the film feels off-key and tedious; Warren Beatty did much better with REDS. Watchable but not enjoyable.

Beatty's atavistic remake of _Here Comes Mr. Jordan_ is scrupulously clean, moderately liberal, irreverently reverent, and refreshingly airy. Such qualities were rampant in the Depression years whence this comedy-fantasy came, but have become increasingly scarce ever since. The only updating necessary was in making the specifics jibe with current California interests: industrial pollution, the dwindling porpoise population, health foods, and (now dated) the L.A. Rams' Super Bowl hopes.

Quirky, quaint and uplifting. Owing a great deal to the likes of 'A christmas Carol' this is a reasonably entertaining and original take on a much visited search for redemption before it's too late. A strong performance from Warren Beatty and Julie Christie make it a cut above the average.
