Harry and Tonto

I'm not 100% on board with Art Carney snubbing Dunkaccino that year but he did more for the movie than he did for history. This Joe Pera-core road movie is balm for the lonely heart

While I certainly wouldn't pick his performance over the ones he beat (Pacino in "The Godfather Part II" and Nicholson in "Chinatown"), Carney is very good in this meandering but nonetheless delightful character study.

The characters are likable but it really tends to mosey around.

A harmless and pleasant film about an old man with a pet cat who travel across the country. Not really any point to it aside from showing a man in his twilight years. Art Carney gives a strong performance, but it's difficult to see why Oscar voters preferred it to more deserving work from Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman and Jack Nicholson that year.

Harry and Tonto is an intelligent road movie, humorous, sex-positive, and unlike most movies about old age, it isn't garishly maudlin. Unfortunately, it doesn't manage to entirely avoid the pitfalls of sentimentality, contrived "contemplative" moments, and overly convenient plot turns such as Harry randomly meeting a cat salesman shortly after pretending to be one. (Epic continuity fail: Blue suitcase taken out of a bus, turns into brown suitcase with an umbrella attached in the next shot!)
