Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I thought they did a decent job of making an interesting but succinct story extension of the book that is pretty funny and wholesome. I think Zachary Levi does a great job of the "born yesterday" naive and optimistic style of humor, and everything involving Jemaine Clement's character made me laugh.

An outdated (by at least a decade) mashup of 'Elf' and 'New Girl' but featuring Zachary Levi and Lil Rel Howery, presumably because Will Ferrell and Lamorne Morris were too old and/or were not interested. Zooey Deschanel does her best to conjure some class on screen, but is pulled down by all the mediocrity that surrounds her.

The fish (and moose and porcupine) out of water schtick works pretty well, with lots of goofy humour and slapstick (see the everything store chaos). The plot could’ve been drawn better (Library Gary’s villain arc is odd), and the imagination theme is half-baked (Mom goes from unbelieving and rational to “unemployed but it’s ok cuz I play piano again now” in an instant) but the meta angle of Harold searching for his creator adds some surprising philosophical intrigue. Nice open ending too.
