Hillarious and sentimental, there's nothing above average in direction and acting, but it's got a hell of a great story. The title characters are so unique and entertaining that it would be extremely hard to hate this movie.

Optimistic. This is the first word one must use when trying to describe the greatness of this film. I'd recommend it to anyone who's sad, lonely, alienated, depressed or just tired of life. Furthermore, I'd recommend it to a suicidal friend in need of a leap of faith. This film is pure joy, a celebration of life.

Lovely in its own way and rather amusing, and the soundtrack is perfect. It's one of the most unusual love stories around, and there are interesting nuances to the characters, particularly Maude. But her life-affirming platitudes are trite and simplistic. Some are beautiful despite this but others make my stomach clench. The anti-authoritarian angle comes on too strong. Such a hopeless product of hippie romanticism... you've got to stick it to The Man, and love is all you need.

Odd, heart-warming, and sweet. Simple but good-looking cinematography helps to present a very wonderful character-driven story. Reminds me vaguely of The Graduate, with its lost young protagonist finding meaning in an unusual romance.

Both adored and despised, HAROLD AND MAUDE is as quintessential a cult film as there is, and the cult is easy to understand: it's strange, often funny, promotes free-spiritedness, has pleasant songs by Cat Stevens, lovely cinematography by John Alonzo, and two strong performances from Bud Cort and Ruth Gordon. But the script proves quite uneven, with Maude as a character veering between light-hearted and psychotic (especially at the end), and with ham-fisted jabs at the military and upper class.

In a lot of this movie's scenes, I can see what kind of a gag or joke they were going for... and I can see that it's funny, and why it SHOULD be funny on paper. But sometimes there's just something off about the execution, and it doesn't have quite the impact it should have.

Talk about a mixed bag. On one level it's fantastic - it's dark, it's funny, and yet it's genuinely touching. But this comes in the hand of ridiculously heavy-handed hippie authoritarianism pushed to its limits. A movie where the "zest for life" character is represented by a criminal who chooses to rebel against polite police officers. It's charming and the soundtrack is great, but sometimes it's an eye-roller. Score is not a grade.

Wonderfully refreshing dark comedy from Hal Hashby. It's hard not to love the two leads as they capitalize on such a great screenplay. The whole film is very representative of the era's youth culture, with a fitting soundtrack from Cat Stevens driving it home.

Most of the comedies out there tend to be silly. This one is far from being silly, and the parts where one laughs are even more than great. It is important to note, that the dramatic scenes are shallow, and that this shallowness, is beyond what this very one could actually bear. Soon he would start feeling the emotion of an actual remorse, that was produced by the act of beholding lost potential.

Absolutely brilliant screenplay, direction and performances. May also be the first example of the "indie film" as a genre (with music by Cat Stevens instead of Sufjan). But it feels - albeit slightly - like it never quite lives up to the sum of its parts, probably because it gets a tad too ridiculous in places. But I'm a sucker for self-immolation and seppoku for laughs, so I'll forgive those.

I must be a horrible person for not liking this movie. First of all I felt it aged poorly, the soundtrack being the most glaring example of this. I felt that Maude was sort of a Juno character (random for the sake of random), or maybe vice versa. Too heavy-handed on the "live your life" schtick.

Enjoyed this a fair bit, even if it was a little too quirky and preachy for its own good. However, the arc of these two characters passing through each others lives while making a significant impact brings a hearty appreciation for life. Ashby's editing of the final sequence is especially good, as the montage brings the film some emotional momentum for the final scene. And a big thumbs up for the Cat Stevens tunes.

Harold and Maude is a very offbeat movie, and an extremely amusing one. This was only my second dose of Hal Ashby, but already I can tell he is one of the most underappreciated filmmakers of his time. By avoiding flash and focusing on script and acting, he allows the characters to speak for the film. Presented here are two very eccentric and quite likable characters, each with their own way of rebuffing the establishment. I was also stricken by the perfect, but not showy, cinematography.

One of the most peculiar and wonderful movies of any decade. About as truly romantic as it gets in the movies. Underneath those elements from the 60s hippie narrative, what this film tells is essentially a story about what makes life worth living: a young man who can only get some residue of the feeling of being alive from experiencing death gets his first sip of life with a woman who brings him into feeling things and loving to feel, a sip that sets him onto the path of feeling and loving more on facing the entropy that devoured his lover just like everyone else. Essentially, a simple and moving story.

The first minutes surprised me greatly and got my attention - skilled practical suicide jokes don’t fall under the usual moviecontent and I was looking forward to a special cinematic experience. But oh bogger, then the Maude-character got introduced and that killed the whole thing. Also the album-presentation-soundtrack by Stevens was a misfit. Should have stayed a short movie I guess.

Harold and Maude is a well-written and often clever film that isn't above throwing in a dose of slapstick. It is also dated in every aspect of its production, from the cast to the dialogue to the aesthetic to the soundtrack. It is still both watchable and enjoyable, though somewhat tame by today's standards, but this is the kind of movie I'd like to see remade taking the concept in a slightly more macabre direction.

Young Harold is an eccentric young man. He loves to stage macabre death scenes. His mother is unphased by his best efforts. Most people consider him odd, and he cannot relating to anyone his age. One day he meets a woman who is also quite unique. However, she is nearly 80 years old. They quickly form an attachment for each other. The spirited woman is unlike anyone he has ever met, nor is likely to meet again. Their romance is doomed, but not for the obvious reasons. Peculiar, unique & funny.

An excellent and heart-warming romance film that won me over due to its dark humour, down-to-earth acting, and portrayal of a lustless relationship. Maude's off-the-wall hippy mentality is wonderfully contrasted with Harold's jaded persona and theatrical darkness (I could watch him commit suicide for hours on end). Terrific soundtrack as well. Quirky films need to be as eccentric, fun, and unannoying as this.

I loved this film! It's another one I wish I had seen ages ago. It felt a lot like many more contemporary independent films. I really liked the wicked, biting sense of humour it had. It's agenda is so obvious that it's painful. Heavy-handed anti-authoritarianism is the core of the film, and it's quirkiness is contrived and annoying at best. It may be off-beat but that doesn't stop it from being an entirely lifeless film. Imagining how much this film influenced independent cinema since is depressing -- these quirks aren't fun or exciting, they're grating and ugly, and their artificiality renders them pointless.
