I hate the Best Animated Feature Oscar. Hate it. It prevents a film like WALL-E from getting a bigger nomination that it justly deserved, and meanwhile shit like Happy Feet can lay claim to being an Academy Award winner. So many arbitrary celebrity voices, dance numbers, you name it. This film annoyed me to no end. It aims for redemption with a 'halp save da erff' moral, but some of the choices made here are just unforgivable. The finale is strange, to say the least. Couldn't wait for it to end.

While I mostly liked the songs, and I could watch cute penguins (CGI or not) all day, this movie is very flawed. Its biggest, most noticeable problem is it feels like two different movies that were lazily stitched together. There is almost no warning for the dark tone that the film abruptly takes during its third act. I appreciate that it wanted to be more than a fluffy kid's movie but it approached that goal in the worst way possible. Its a shame too, I could have enjoyed both of these movies.

For me this was surprisingly decent, primarily due to the very well designed dance sequences and characters with a decent plotline to back it all up. The only criticism I can make is the plot gets slightly inconsistent at times and goes unexplained in parts. To name one of these it is never explained why Happy Feet never develops, seeming to reamin juvenile long after his peers. Still, if you can ignore these discrepancies you are in for a very entertaining film for just about all ages.

WHAT THE FUCK! This shit is insane. Psychotic, schizophrenic, plot and dumb characters. The central conceit is just ridiculous, penguins all are forced to sing pop songs, but old fashioned tap dancing just isn't allowed, WTF!!!! This film is also disturbingly sexual. Too adult for children and too stupid for adults with a blatant environmentalist subtext that isn't even that relevent. I'm pretty sure humans aren't killing penguins...but the animation on seals and whales is pretty sweet.

Nice attempt to introduce the kiddies to classic pop and rock, but the film's both creepy and gives a really scary message. Why do the female penguins have breast-shaped lumps, and why is it okay that they are basically telling children that wildlife is only worth something if it does something cute?

I must say that I'm rather disappointed, but I kinda enjoyed the film. The early scenes with the baby penguins are so cute that my head nearly exploded. The tone shifts quite a bit towards the end when it starts to get more into the over-fishing and such (and I didn't expect live human actors!). The animation and visuals are stunning, and the happy (well, happy besides the plight of the outcast Mumble and some near-fatal encounters) atmosphere is infectious, but overall it's an unfocused film

Happy Feet has good animation and a strong environmental message. The voice cast has several high-profile names who do a decent job of breathing personality into their characters, but their voices are recognisable enough to be distracting. The jukebox of pop songs that fill the runtime are also fun. Unfortunately a weak plot make each of the aforementioned aspects work against each other, making the film a lesser sum of its parts. Overall rather forgettable.

I really loved this; I thought it was a LOT of fun. The motion-capture choreography was really impressive, and the arrangements of pop songs were honestly really good arrangements that were sung really well, with lots of cool backup harmonies. The unadulterated enthusiasm of the jukebox-musical first half was involving enough that by the time the movie decided to launch into full-fledged Story Mode, I was so invested that I was willing to go wherever the filmmakers wanted to take me.

Not bad. Not great, either. But peculiar. Very peculiar indeed. In fact, I was astounded, and somewhat befuddled, by an effective but, compared to the levity of the rest of the film, extremely dark turn of events towards the end.

Cheerful, colourful animated film begins magically, and seems destined for classic status in its first half, before a worthy but heavy-handed (and repetitive) environmental agenda starts to sink it and drain the fun away. The voice cast seems to be having a whale of a time, with Kidman's breathy Norma Jean and Williams in multiple roles (most amusingly as a Morgan Freeman-like narrator) standing out. Beautifully framed for the widescreen, utilising astonishing computer animation.

I didn't enjoy the first half and thought it was just a typical computer generated family movie. Was pleasantly surprised at the second half when it starts to evolve past just singing and dancing penguins. The final thirty minutes are fantastic. The message was really opaque but I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it.

Definitely not the all-out entertaining romp that it should have been. After the magic of Toy Story, Monsters Inc. and the like, I expected no less. Robin Williams' character is an obvious highlight, but I found that there simply wasn't enough effort put into the script. The animators seemed content to show us a cute penguin face every so often and hope that that would keep us suitably entertained. Well, no, I'm afraid it didn't.

"Happy Feet" starts out as a run-of-mill animation film for kids (i.e. pretty boring) but then makes a miraculous turn. It deals with some very real "adult" issues, and while the movie does have a happy end, real life clearly has not. In fact, and I never thought I'd say this about an animated film, Happy Feet's happy end may just be an elaborate hallucination (those of you who have seen the movie know what I'm getting at). Great film, and not really for kids.

The use of popular songs to evoke a sense of elation comes off as extremely contrived. Most of the gags, dialogue, and emotional beats are entirely unoriginal and, like Pixar films, we're supposed to appreciate them as fresh simply because they're being filtered through anthropomorphized creatures. The movie does take a truly bizarre turn in the final stages, and the various messages are well-intentioned, if somewhat sloppy. Still, not much here for an adult audience.

Happy Feet is a wonderfully entertaining movie that borders on several different genres and does well doing so. It's a heart-felt star-studded animated film that does little to differentiate itself from others just like it--at first. As the story starts to pick up you get enchanted by the surroundings and the characters that occupy them. Surely, it ranks up there with the best animated movies around and it is one of 2006's best.

The themes may feel a little familiar, and some aspects of the script may appear rather hasty (e.g. how easily the penguins are swayed on the matter of dancing, or the almost magical solution at the end), nevertheless, even though the material is not always handled in a manner that would allow it to rival the emotional depth of your average Pixar movie, "Happy Feet" is a good time throughout: it is pleasant and upbeat, it boasts great animation and an engaging story, and Robin Williams aces it.

Skipped for ages cos I thought it was typical Disney hypocrisy & the title/music were annoying in the trailer. But learning it wasn’t Disney, gave it a go. It has so much heart; some of the music was awful pop, but the movie is so surreal & original it’s forgivable. It starts with a sexy Marilyn Monroe penguin in Prince duet with a deeply southern Robin Williams penguin, has emotional depths and is surprisingly zoologically accurate. The art is way more generic than the story.

It's quite baffling that this is directed by George Miller, the director behind Mad Max saga, and while I was not really on-board this tap dancing penguin musical, I have to respect Miller's cojones to follow his vision even in a genre that is known for playing it safe. It's just too long and the eco message ending felt a bit out of place.

I suppose Happy Feet is fine for what it is... even if what it is is nothing more than been there, done that children's fare. I probably would have liked the movie a lot more if the "humans are the bad guys" plot involved a lot more cars and explosions. "I'm only here for the gasoline." - Mumble.

I won't deny that the film has goofy energy and some fun moments, but it's really uneven in terms of pacing, plotting, and tone.
