Ignore all the bad parts and it's okay. Hard hitting review maybe tomorrow I'll come up with a better one. *secret ploy to get stuck in a Groundhog Day loop*

Well if I thought the first one was confusing this a total W/T/ F/ ? head scratcher If you can forget trying to figure out the story ( I kinda liked it) stuck to most of the original cast picks up where the first film ended and the comedy is genuinely funny

I can admire its anarchic Back to the Future Part II (directly referenced in the dialogue) On Crack sprit, but ultimately it’s just too derivative of the original - a pretty flawed original at that - to really do all that much for me.

By the second time around, Landon drops the Horror movie pretense and decides that instead of deriving a splice of two genres together and making a fairly unoriginal mashup of both, he makes his own movie. The result is far better, it's funny enough, fun enough, and somewhat reminiscent of Raimi, but with a glossier, more mainstream feel.

I do think that the charm was a little lost in the second one. 2U does keep some of the same "not-so-serious" personality, but focused more on less likable characters with more focus on the sci-fi than the slasher. I think this franchise, if it continues, will definitely struggle with moving past the quality of the first.

A good deal more haphazard than the first one, but in spite of that and an unsatisfying ending, I still give this time loop tale a marginal thumbs up.

Given that the directive for most sequels is "the same but different" it soon becomes clear that there has never been a movie better suited to franchise than the 1st film. The hard part was figuring out a good explanation for why the protagonist has to go through the Groundhog Day-ness of it all again & why she doesn't know who the killer is. This does that & still remains mostly unpredictable. It also piles on twists until 1 of the kills doesn't make sense, but it's still a fun ride.

A bit disappointing. I definitely missed the horror elements. It wasn't very funny and I was kind of annoyed that they explained why the events of the first movie happened. A lot of it was surprisingly slow, actually - I was on the verge of bored for a significant chunk, just waiting for the climax, which was ultimately anti-climactic. There were a couple of really entertaining scenes, and Rothe's good again. Not an awful sequel, but they definitely shouldn't do another one.

May be the first movie making itself up as it went along. It's unapologetically batty: imagine Looper, Spider-Man: Spider-Verse, and Groundhog Day duking it out in a college sci-fi romcom with a slasher subplot. You really can't. (To quote another movie, "This story's got more twists and turns than Chubby Checker in a blender.") The one consistency is Jessica Rothe's performance - she commits to every manic moment, keeping us invested even when we have no clue what's going on.

First one is probably better, but both are pretty okay I'd say. I wish they had gone more batshit insane with their ideas because basically it ended up just being a fancy, sci-fi way to use the same premise as the first for the most part. But it's still a fun ride with some glee and cool moments. Some heart but the central decision that the main character has to make is wonky. Spoilers: you can keep your mom but also make this guy fall in love with you; the seeds for it were already planted.

The first one was a comedy masquerading as a horror movie. This one is a sci-fi comedy masquerading as a horror movie. Almost no horror, really bad comedy, and equally bad sci-fi. Written and directed by a guy who had nothing to do with the first movie.

I know it's mostly a light-hearted affair, but the final moment of the mid-credit scene left somewhat of a bad, misogynistic taste in the mouth. Not since 'Game of Thrones' has a central redemption arc been so thoroughly and thoughtlessly smashed, making the protagonist an exact mirror of the killer roommate in the first film, in both motivations and actions, with something like glee. But coded as "cool". Zero awareness of any actual ironies though.

Even though its for completely different reasons I think I enjoyed this as much as I did the first film. Now don't get me wrong I don't really love either movie but they are entertaining and easy watches so I really can't complain to much. The horror elements are pretty much nonexistent but that's okay. The Science fiction parts were a big draw for my wife but for me it was the difference between the events and characters between the two movies that were the biggest draw.

Even less of a horror film than the first one. Get's a slightly better score than the original for it's attempt to make sense of the time loop with movie science.

I thought for the most part the 1st was pretty solid, and I think in a very rare case when it comes to horror movies, this is a bit better. I love the play on the first one, I can understand how it could piss people off, especially since the science behind this is hit or miss. For me though, I love the charm and satire of these characters and I love just how absurd it is, especially with its play on Groundhog's day and other movie tropes. Take it for what it is and you're good.

I really like this series, and Jessica Rothe is a fun actress. This film throws a lot at the wall, and y'know what, I am picking up what doesn't stick. Does that make sense? I don't know, it's early and I haven't had my coffee yet.

Rothe was extremely likeable/charismatic again but the plot just muddles through in the second half. Starts off interesting but becomes somewhat of a rehash of the first movie though without any of the horror. I just don't understand any of the characters, especially the needlessly comical dean. Parents did not pay off at all. They're not concerned about the govt using the tech? Fav scene: Rothe stomping out of the dorm with the two guys in tow, angry at what's happening to her again.

Set your DVR's ladies and gentlemen, because I don't say this very often: I was totally wrong about a movie, that movie being the first Happy Death Day. I didn't get what it was. I thought it was trying to play it straight. I literally "just didn't get it", and wouldn't you know who won the pony, I didn't like that movie very much. I get it this time, and who'd have guessed, I like this one a lot more! Just have fun damn it, even if the science is a little ehhhhhhh. Does that REALLY matter?

Has the same sense of fun as the first, but the bad science makes it remarkably less coherent. Besides the premise being a lot harder to swallow, the character motivations make almost no sense, even in an alternate universe.

It's hard to live up to the fun and uniqueness of the original, and this one tries to step it up a notch while stepping a little too far in the wrong direction. You gotta love the attempt but it's a little misguided and becomes a bit of mumbo-jumbo.

Less focused on the time loop this time, and the murder mystery is a bit too simple. I guess they didn't want to focus on the same kind of story as the first one, so I'm still very impress by the result.

This one was a complete tonal mess and I would have gone along with it if it weren't for the really stupid romance plot? I mean Carter is nice and all, but the choice the character had to make made no sense practically. To say more would be spoilery. But Jessica Rothe is quite great and this had plenty of fun moments in 15 separate genres and subgenres.

Sure, let's add teen sci-fi comedy to the genre mash-up. The horror elements have been toned down to slapsticky death scenes, sure, but the lead has proved that her elevation of her character in the first film wasn't a fluke — she clearly gives a shit or at least fakes it well enough that we give a shit. The wood chipper incident in the montage made me ugly laugh.

The first one was silly fun but this one is more silly with less fun. It starts with a bit of promise, but then the ultimate killer shows up: TIME TRAVEL. The whole thing becomes such a mess that it’s hard to suspend belief from the silly plot line because there’s no fun built around it anymore. Time travel sucks because you can’t build a movie around it. Trust me, I couldn’t cash in on my time-travelling Star Wars film because it was an abysmal flop.

Honestly this one was way weirder and way less serious than the first. Some moments were over the top with the heavy handed emotional resolutions and the how does one be truly happy realizations. It was a fun pace when poking fun at itself, it was dull when over exerting on the serious side of things.

I know I’m giving it a high score, but this hits all the sweet spots for me, minus of course the underwhelming at best killer reveal. This sequel removes a lot of the Horror of the first in favor of Sc-Fi and more humor. The humor landed well for me too, with very few bad jokes, and some really hilarious ones. The energy and tone of the film also worked in its favor. Jessica Rothe does a great job again in a sequel that is equal to its predecessor, but in very different ways.

It tries its best to recapture the same magic of the original, but all it really ends up doing is biting off much more than it can chew. While there are still solid moments, some genuine humor and strong performances from Rothe & the rest of the cast, the writing is littered with errors and plot holes that are never explained & the plot on the whole is largely a clunky, cluttered mess. It gets points for originality, but also loses some for trying a bit too hard to be a bit too much.

Classic mistake: introduce new plot elements to explain the bits we didn't need explained from the first one, and get so obsessed with it that you forget to add anything else new. That said, Rothe is still good and it has some good moments, but it feels more like drawn-out stinger to the first one than a sequel in its own right.
