I had a pretty good time with it. Rothe clearly did as well. She's very good in this despite her character not being very likable at first. I found the reveal to be fairly predictable and I was honestly expecting more comedy, but it's still pretty hilarious at times and the writer and director wet all out (aside from making this PG-13). It's not great, but it's certainly worth visiting for Rothe and the Halloween season.

I know that there are people that read my reviews so I get pretty excited when I get the chance to champion a film that I feel might deserve a little added attention. Anyways, thanks for listening to a completely unrelated observation that has nothing to do with this lackluster movie. This gets some things right and a whole lot of things wrong. Also, (climbs onto high horse) let's all agree that some horror movies are only ever meant to be macabre and not always scary. Nothing wrong with that.

A generic slasher with the kind of twist that mid-80's slashers used to implement to differentiate themselves from the pack. But in 2017, you need more than a tired repeating day gimmick to even justify the production of a horror movie like this. If this one came out 40 years earlier, I'd have rated it a middle of the road flick for the era, but things have changed, by today's horror standards, a gore-less, boob-less, uninspired slasher is a bad move, and this one kind of sucks.

Bill Murray uses his endless loop to learn the piano. Our heroine here uses hers to stroll about the quad naked. I'm fine with that. The quaint campus love story hidden behind the quantum murders reminded me a little of Revenge of the Nerds...but without the nerd having to resort to rape on a moon mattress to convince the cheerleader that those aren't just pens in his protected pocket.

It's fun, I don't see the glaring issues that others here seem to. I don't even think this was meant to be a horror movie. It certainly is set up like one and occasionally acts like one, but you can tell the director thinks it's a little silly and acts on that, leading to some upbeat montages and ridiculous deaths. My problem is that I don't think it went far enough into silly territory. It does everything... okay. Would have given it a 70 if the plot twist wasn't so predictable.

Is the movie cheesy? Sure. But it's also fun and adorable. The culprit was predictable for me, but they put a nice spin to it. And kudos for the reference to Groundhog day! On the down side, the movie put too much emphasis on college girls and the stereotypical ways in which they behave, but I guess it was still done in an entertaining manner. Finally, looking at the movie from a "repeatable day" perspective - nothing new, but nothing disappointing either.

Predictable, does some work setting up a good premise and maybe even a mystery twist then immediately solves it as to hit the 90 min runtime. If this movie was 20 min longer and the time well spent it might actually be a real solid comedy horror.

I really enjoyed Happy Death Day. It was everything I wanted from a horror version of Groundhog Day. Enough tongue-in-cheek humor combined with some good suspense/thrills. Was it 100% original? No, but it didn't need to be. It did what it did very well, and I had a lot of fun watching it. Good stuff!

Interestingly enough I actually hated the first half of this movie, I found the lead character, Tree, completely annoying, she embodied everything I came to hate about High School. Happy Death Day also isn't very original and is quite predictable, but thankfully the lead character improved, became very likable, and does have real emotional pull. Also the self aware, tongue in cheek vibe, and tip to "Groundhog Day" all made this film pretty enjoyable.

It's a fun turn on a classic plot, with enough self-awareness to make it palatable. Tree is a charismatic lead, and it's pretty hard not to cheer her on. That being said, the movie is no Wes Craven movie and fails to elevate itself with biting genre-savvy or a potent timeliness, and becomes largely a forgettable experience.

A fantastically funny horror comedy, like if Groundhog Day, Friday the 13th, and Mean Girls was one long film. The mystery of who the killer is, is handled alright. But the characters and the accuracy they portray College Sorority life really helps the film. So many solid scenes and lines.

About the standard in moronic horror movies these days. It has a neat premise, but it takes in the usual tropes in horror movies where they make the protagonist extremely unlikable backed by the usual stupidity of horror plots. I swear, no one knows how to use the groundhog day premise in Hollywood.

Hollywood has yet to learn that the sociopathic mean girls trope isn't funny or interesting anymore. Or at least this writer/director duo hasn't. This wasn't as bad as I expected it to be but it's far from any kind of accomplishment. We've already had a "Groundhog Day" style movie with horrible teen girls learning lessons this year in "Before I Fall", and while this may be marginally better, its attempts at cheap self-awareness and shoehorned comedy don't do it any favors. Scares are infrequent.

As a "Groundhog Day" movie (I guess we've had enough movies and TV episodes of it that this now qualifies as its own genre), it's easy to go along with and enjoy. As a horror/thriller it's quite a bit poorer, inherently not really "scary" due to the impermanence of death in its world but also reliant on the protagonist making many stupid decisions to sustain its feature length. Protip: If in this situation, just get a gun or even a big knife and kill your killer when they come at you. Fin.

I went into this with very low expectations. I was surprised. Yes, this is a very unoriginal idea that was taken from Groundhogs Day, X-Files, Supernatural and other tv shows. But it did contribute something of its own in this kind of mythology. Of course, the lead starts off a horrible person. But her character progresses for the better as she tries to solve her own murder. And I thought it was pretty funny too.

I kinda liked this, actually. Surpisingly. I mean this movie gave me no indication that it was going to be worth anything, but in the end, it's actually a kind of fun, down to-earth slasher/whodunnit romp with some interesting twists. It's not great, by any means, but I don't think it's worth looking over entirely.

Mediocre horror that uses Groundhog Day as it's gimmick. Half way through they bring a nonsensical plot element into the mix to try and re-inject some tension and peril for the main character, but by the end it has been completely forgotten about which makes even less sense! Second half is more a rom-com with a few slasher scenes than a horror. Probably plays a lot better to a teenage audience who won't have seen so many of the cliches on show here before.

Extremely clever at melding 2 tired genres that are usually tonally the opposite of one another: Groundhog Day & slasher films. Balancing the 2 isn't easy, but the movie never feels inconsistent. The screenwriter's obviously given this a lot of thought as his choices are necessary to make this hybrid work: he inverts a cliche (the virtuous final girl) to allow for humor & a character arc; & adds a new concern to the repeating-day scenario to create urgency where there normally wouldn't be any.

Well, obviously it’s not that scary when people can’t die, this movie should be treated more as a comedy than a horror film. Happy Death Day is always entertaining, with a good performance from Rothe, who’s character starts as annoying and later becomes quite amusing. The “Whodunnit” factor is very important to me in these types of movies, and while it’s not great here, it’s not as bad as it almost was. While it’s pretty unoriginal, it has fun in doing so.

Happy Death Day is the answer to the question nobody asked: what would happen if you crossed Scream with Groundhog Day? Surprisingly, the result is a spirited college slasher with a lively mix of jump scares, knife play and whodunnit guesswork. Its Final Destination inspired kill scenes, comedic tonal shifts and self-referential Bill Murray meta moment simply add to the fun. By no means a classic, but still a welcome addition to a genre that has been dying for a fresh coat of blood.

The concept for this film isn't really that clever, but the film clearly knows this and just has fun with it anyway. It's not very good as a horror movie, as it's really not scary, but I'm not sure it's trying all that hard to be. Definitely could've used more blood and gore. It's more of a comedy/thriller. It had some genuinely funny moments, and yeah, it was just enjoyable to watch. There were a number of faults and plot holes I noticed, but nothing that really ruined the movie.

Before I fall directed by Wes Craven. What is lovely about this is how it totally embraces conventions to find a college comedy within the relive-the-day-you-die plot. The fact that, in the end, Rothe's character never watched Groundhog Day (she doesn't even know who Bill Murray is), which would've made her life so much easier, just makes this even more fun. Of course this is nothing like a Craven-directed meta, but it's so vibrant and, you know, the good guy has a The Live! poster in his dorm.

Happy Death Day is an annoying movie, one that has a decent premise that is wasted in the execution. We hate our protagonist, which means that we don't care about the turmoil she's about to go through--in fact, we kind of hope she does. Most of the other characters are also awful. There aren't any scares, there's no creativity to the deaths, it's not funny, it's not insightful, it isn't dramatic--it's a whole lot of nothing.

"Groundhog Day" as a slasher is a fun concept, and the execution was quite enjoyable. I liked the characters’ sarcastic banter, and the actors were solid. There were a few effective scenes, but I wished they focused more on the horror elements as it wasn't really that scary and the comedy didn’t really hit the mark either. Killer’s identity was easy to guess, and the ending was a bit underwhelming. Still, a fun 90 mins which acts as a bridge between PG-13 suspense and something like "Scream"

I kept trying to call some kind of clever twist throughout the movie, like multiple killers, or multiple people stuck in the time loop, but I'm also pretty sure both of those have been done before. So instead of those, nothing terribly clever happens in this one. Some of the humor hits, but in terms of horror and mystery, it's not too amazing.

Top badass moment? Tree going through her ‘Buffy in a black leather jacket’ phase, except she’s not Buffy and as a result gets her ass totally kicked. What sort of name is Tree, anyway? Couldn’t her parents be bothered to whittle the list down to at least species level? Not that I much cared for her, even after she’d gone though the whole learning-about-myself-and-becoming-a-better-person routine. Fun but mostly forgettable; it really needed some Ned Ryerson. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Interesting premise (GROUNDHOG DAY as a slasher) is gutted and left hanging out to dry – not scary enough to work as horror, not funny enough to work as goofy send-up, and not intelligent enough to score any “meta” points. Unnecessarily complicates and convolutes its set-up (the repeated “walk of shame” sequence becomes unintentionally funny because of the gaggle of supporting players it does nothing with). Further hobbled by bland and lethargic performances (though Rothe does her best).

Time loop + birthday + giant baby trying to kill you + unresolved grief is actually a pretty good thematic blend and I really enjoyed the heck out of it. Even if the killer gave me a vibe the first time I saw them and I did guess some other twists. Yeah, it uses all the time loop tropes, but that's what's fun about a genre. Slightly overrating this one if I'm honest, but it's a high-concept 90-minuter committed to not wearing out its welcome and I have trouble not finding that ingratiating. (Incidentally, I'm very puzzled by the people remarking, as if it were an accident of the film's production, that the protagonist wasn't likeable at the beginning. Wasted opportunity. Such a great premise, but it's one of those that hinges on how you conclude it and well, it was a little lukewarm. The main character is also not particularly likeable, so we don't care as much for the fact that they get "multiple chances". While it is slightly amusing to watch the different deaths, it's laced with cliches and ends up being unremarkable.

This film was hard to hate. The comedic elements were actually better than the horror aspects. It never really sets the bar high and sort of coasts easily through its very muddled plot line. Engaging enough though but as it draws to a close it is the sort of thing that you want to just see it end. The Red herrings were awful, and even the one final reveal was very easy to call. At the point during the writing process I think Scott Lobdell just wanted to troll himself.
