In "Red Dragon" we learned who he was. In "Silence of the Lambs" we learned how he did it. Now comes the most chilling chapter in the life of Hannibal Lecter -- the one that answers the most elusive question of all -- why? (MGM)

Pathetic. Completely unnecessary attempt to give a character a backstory that needed none. Having no idea what motivates the legendary cult-cannibal was part of his myth and made him an unpredictable force. Adding this lame revenge plot serves in no way as a justification for becoming the sophisticated monster he is. It could've only been worse if some random asian chick appeared and taught him how to fight like a samurai...yeah, that would've been sooo lame...

We've learned one thing from this movie: There's only one Hannibal Lecter and that's Anthony Hopkins.. Ulliel really isn't and that shows of and ruins this movie. Where's the psychological touch for which Lecter is so known?

So how they made Hannibal Lecter seem in this movie is him being the ultimate neckbeard guy, the type who likes to do Youtube videos of them cutting apart stuff with a katana, then tipping their fedora and calling women 'm'lady'. Just huge yikes here. Hannibal as played by Anthony Hopkins was a smart man with a strange sense of charisma, but the Hannibal we see here has nothing going for him charisma-wise.

On its own, this film is made....fair enough? If this was your only introduction to the character, you wouldn't hate the movie. It would be very cliche and stereotypical, and feel like an asian fable about vengeance, but not much more than that. But if it's the last Hannibal film you see, you're going to hate it because literally nothing about it feels like Hannibal.......at all.

I really wanted to feel like this film could offer something as great as the other stories surrounding Hannibal Lecter. Gaspard Ulliel does what he can but the script ultimately creates too many plot holes and too little substance to help it become just as important a story to the Lecter Legacy.

Hannibal Rising shows the origins of evil by giving us a plot so horrid with its blatant disregard for the viewer's intelligence in presenting a world devoid of realism, lacking basic cause and effect liaisons and presenting a story supposedly part of the so far more or less consistent world of the other 3 films in the Hannibal saga, but in truth the only common ground being the word "Hannibal," that such an attack on the kindly expectant viewer becomes an abhorrent abomination. Truly evil.

It wasn't very good. Dead boring. But then again, so was the novel. As with a lot of horror icons, Hannibal Lecter is much scarier when he isn't explained. It's directed clumsily, and the dialogue pretty trite. The Anthony Hopkins ones are the only Hannibal films worth watching.

Hannibal is a brilliant character, he's not your normally portrayed psychopath, and this movie shows a facet of his live where he was still growing intellectual and sentimentally. The movie will make you feel disgusted with your amoral thoughts and while I do agree that the script could have used more work the acting felt fantastic and all the other elements for a fantastic picture are there. I think a lot of people wanted another Anthony Hopkins film instead of another Hannibal story.

As it fits into the Hannibal series, yeah it's garbage; undermines the character and his story. On it's own, I actually do like it. Yeah the villains are beyond one dimensional and are built up as more monstrous than human, but the actor playing Hannibal does a good job being sinister with little dialogue. There's a steady and maintained tone of depression. It's not great by any means, but not worth disregarding altogether.

Wow this is truly sad. The character of Lecter truly did not need a backstory, and surely not one as poor. Bad acting and weird, stylistic direction do not compliment this film's somewhat interesting, if not plot-hole-ridden story. Sadly, this movie is a grab for money and franchise revival. Not worthy of the great psychology and characters seen in Silence and it's sequels.

This one has to be one of the worst, most unnecessary prequels ever made, simply beacuse it wants to solve the whole mystery surrounding Hannibal, telling us what happened to him and what made him become what he is. They finally did: managed to kill Hannibal Lecter.

The performances are poor, the writing is laughable, the plot doesn't flow and the score is overbearing and distracting. It was adopted from a novel written almost solely so that the Lecter novels' author could make sure that his story was the one Hollywood used, and in his haste, he didn't come up with a good or watchable plot. The novel wasn't well-received, and I can see no reason for you to watch this movie. There is no suspense, no joy, and nothing to gleam from this ill-conceived disaster.

The main thing that ruins it for me is that it tries to justify hannibals actions. If it's all or revenge then he's not that messed up after all, I much preferred the image of him that we were given in silence of the lambs, that he was just a crazy, twisted dude. He's definitely scarier when you don't know his backstory. I just hope this hasn't ruined the original for me...

Hannibal franchise reduced to a crappy b-movie. The kid doing bad Hopkins impersonation was amusing for about 10 seconds. Even Li Gong was terrible. But who wouldn't look bad with dialogs like these. This movie should have never been made.

Hilarious cash in attempt that was beyond terrible. Even Anthony Hopkins finally decided it wasn't a good idea to continue in the role of Lecter. Somehow Li Gong got involved in this absolute pile of shit too. It's worth seeing for camp value and how far Hollywood will go to keep a "franchise" alive.

Thomas Harris was right during the first 3 films, to not have seen them (this pattern of non-involvement ended before Red Dragon, but after Hannibal - the original movie was 'Manhunter'). He ended up getting involved in the film side and this was the result.

Not good enough as a stand alone, it looses still more points in my book for being a lackluster prequel to one of my favorite movies. Took the mystique out of Lecter, and I couldn't help thinking about medichlorians during the film.

Unlike a lot of people, I think the previous Thomas Harris films (with maybe the exception of Manhunter) are not only not holy, but pretty campy. This movie takes a more serious approach than any of them, and not only does it provide a believable explanation for the origin of Lecter, it's pretty damn well done. Unfortunately, it has to absolutely wallow in some pretty miserable subject matter to do so, making it far from fun to watch.

The teen playing hannibal is a joke in comparsion to Hopkins, as suspected. He just learnt in a way to speak to sound ironic all the time and makes snobby gestures while doing "evil" stuff, now thats not enough to play a psycopath.

I know it isn't exactly good sport to pick on a three year old but the kid who plays Mischa is terrible, she sounds like Animal from the Muppets. Also Gaspard Ulliel's penchant for overacting doesn't exactly channel Anthony Hopkins as much as make Hopkins wince and say, "Holy Shit, do I really sound like that?"
