Hamsun

Superbly played by von Sydow and Nørby, "Hamsun" is a dark and complex biopic, difficult but rewarding throughout its long running time. It serves as a reminder that a person can be a revered genius and a blithering idiot at the same time. The embittered thirst for attention driving Marie is another focal point.

A good biopic is always a treat, and HAMSUN delivers, tracing the last 15 years of Norwegian author Knut Hamsun's life; idolized by his countrymen, he became an outspoken admirer of Hitler--with tragic consequences. Max von Sydow is superb in the title role, bringing to life the contrast between Hamsun's sharp mind and aging body. Ghita Norby is no less fine as his frustrated, yet devoted wife. Intelligent, sympathetic screenplay; solid (if not quite exceptional) direction by Jan Troell.

a film that shows just how small everyone is, and how in over our heads we can get. nobody's infallible, not even (or least of all) old national treasures. von Sydow is monumental in this.

I wish it could have concentrated on a smaller period of time, this movie has too much to tell. Shame, because Von Sydow is brilliant as always, and Hamsun is an extremely interesting character.

Saw this some years ago. I don't remember much, so I'll give it a non-commital score.
