Halloween II

1981
Suspense/Thriller, Horror
1h 32m
Picking up precisely where its predecessor left off, Halloween II follows the same ill-fated characters as they encounter the knife-wielding maniac they left for dead in the first Halloween. It seems the inhuman Michael Myers is still very much alive and out for more revenge as he stalks the deserted halls of the hospital where his sister lays waiting. As he gets closer and closer to his terrified target, Dr. Loomis discovers the chilling mystery behind the crazed psychopath's savage actions. (Universal)

Donald Pleasence goes absolutely apeshit, the best part of this is when they hit the kid dressed up as Myers with a car and he explodes and they go "THAT WASNT HIM WHO CARES"

Like trying to "Trick or Treat" at the local polling station, I am just bit late with all the Halloween fun. However, so were all the "Halloween" sequels too. Despite the immediate continuity being interesting, the family twist is a cheap ploy, and this sequel feels like it was made too self-aware of being caught-up inside the early 80's slasher trend that its predecessor had begun. While arguably the best Michael Myers "Halloween" sequel, on re-watch, this movie feels more dated than the first.

While the first 2/3rds has the usual attempts at trying to generate "suspense" by putting characters we don't care about in jeopardy, the last 1/3 gets more interesting as it leads to the killer stalking 2 characters who, having survived the first film, have become actual protagonists the audience is invested in as opposed to interchangeable victims. The final showdown (esp Laurie's use of a weapon) is great & there's also a scene involving an elevator that was so suspenseful I was giddy.

For a slasher film, it's somewhat above average, and the hospital location (sporting a full-breasted nurse who opts for a steamy bath while at work), an inherently scary place, is a horror no-brainer. But Part II is next to worthless when compared to the excellent original.

It's depressing how quickly the slasher genre evolved into movies with homicidal superbeasts who can't walk faster than a lichen. This movie is so lean on the killing and so badly put together, I was bored out of my mind. It's pretty sad that even though Carpenter had a hand in this, he couldn't manage to do anything even minorly interesting--and he was already in the process of making "The Thing". Guess that explains it, he put heart in the other, leaving nothing for "Halloween."

Quality opening 20 minutes as it picks up right where the first one left off, and then it turns into everything the original wasn't (boring, unscary) as Myers wanders Haddonfield's hospital methodically picking off the "sexy" medical staff without anyone noticing that their colleagues are missing on the same night an escaped mass murderer is terrorizing their very city. I'm sure they all just went out for coffee or something...at exactly the same time. Mask never looked this good again, though.

Enjoyable enough follow-up which is firmly situated in the "cheap-and-nasty" FRIDAY THE 13TH mould as opposed to the more elevated original. Film may have worked better built around Pleasance's quite magnificently campy take on Loomis; hampered by the paralytic nature of her role, Curtis seems subdued and dull by comparison. Director Rosenthal slavishly imitates Carpenter's framing and style, but can't really capture the same flavour (or tension).

Pretty alright for a slasher sequel. What really holds it back from greatness is some unrealistic murder, some confusing plot structure and, unfortunately, too few scares. But I liked the final showdown (a lot actually), the acting, the direction (mostly), the score and that it actually feels like the end of Halloween. There’s just too little tension or urgency for my liking I guess. This could have been a LOT better, but it also could have been a lot worse.

Slick but needlessly bloody. Sharply photographed and featuring a better-than-average supporting cast, but awfully pointless and predictable, with graphic murder scenes inspired by the first two Friday the 13th movies added in post-production by Carpenter. JLC is wasted.

Not as good as the original but still better than the average 80's slasher flick for sure. Mostly due to, in my opinion at least, the very impressive cinematography by Dean Cundey. I think the main complaint for me is that Michael Myers literally becomes the horror movie stereotype. The unkillable walking machine that manages to not only catch up to someone sprinting by merely walking but is impervious to any none-inventive forms of assault.

Now HERE's the crap you expect when popping in a slasher flick. Michael Myers is no longer intimidating. Lots of "boo!" jump scares. A fucking cat jumps out at one point! The techno'd-up Halloween theme song is unnecessary. Jamie Lee's acting is weirdly muted, like she couldn't give a shit. Her expression when she's in immediate, about-to-be-stabbed-to-death mortal peril reads as "mildly unhappy." Great boobs in the hot tub scene though, and Dean Cundey's cinematography still gets a thumbs up.

Decent sequel. Honestly the most impressive thing about it is that everyone looks exactly the same and it was made 3 years later. The kills are more gruesome and more bloody than the original yet less interesting and not as cool. Suffers from typical horror movie cliches and some pointless scenes that no one will care about. If Michael could develop the ability to run he would literally be unstoppable.

The setting was right (a hospital resembling a morgue) as was the decision to continue right after the events of the first film. It's customary to claim that it would have been better if Carpenter directed it, especially as Rosenthal simply apes his style, but many of the problems here are actually his fault (i.e. bad plot twists and generic slasher kills). This was also the beginning of shouty Loomis, although some of Pleasance's line readings are memorably camp ("I SHOT HIM SIX TIMES!").

Surprisingly solid follow-up that doesn't feel like a cash-grab. The immediate continuity is cool. Cinematographer Dean Cundey stays on, and everything happens at night, so it looks great. The score gets a neat twist. The kills are handled well. On the downside, everything feels more codified and trope-ish, and Rosenthal isn't able to recreate the suspense of the original. There are also a LOT of poor character logic (why didn't they do X moments).

It's hard to match the masterpiece that is the first Halloween, but it's direct sequel is nowhere near as bad as other immediate sequels in horror franchises. The characters are less exciting and the lack of reliance on the most interesting one, Lori, is detrimental. But honestly, Michael Myers manages to still be fun and interesting to watch, and it has some pretty good kills. Not to be overlooked!

Halloween II's attempts to recreate the strong quiet intensity of the original is undermined by a need to 'measure up' to the slashers it inspired. However, as a companion piece, this sequel is satisfying and brutal enough for my taste. Though it loses many points for introducing the brother/sister connection as an afterthought.

Rick Rosenthal pulls off his best Carpenter impression and succeeds in surprising fashion. Gone is the impending dread and it is replaced with a familiar attention to kills, but the photography is chilling enough and the score still elevates Michael Myers to something mythical. Of course he has help with the start of the Halloween lore and family history, which, hate it or love it, becomes a staple of the franchise.

Rick Rosenthal tries to recreate the menacing atmosphere and constant, slow-burning tension of John Carpenter's original - and one could argue that for the most part he does succeed. But next to the suspense, "Halloween II" is clearly a dumber offering, what with the plot holes, flimsy twist and overall exaggeration - oh and a load of idiotic new characters we do not care about. It's a good horror movie and an inoffensive sequel but definitely no classic.

Top badass moment? The truth behind US medical care. Despite having a maternity unit, Haddonfield's hospital manages with about half a dozen staff; (including a security guard who looks exactly like the one who gets killed by the T-1000 in Terminator 2). Not that any of the patients make a sound. It's Halloween, where're all the firework injuries and drunks in A&E? Can't imagine an NHS hospital ever having so many empty beds. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Compared to its predecessor, Halloween II's lack of heart and inspiration shines. It seems less interested in being a worthy successor and more in copying its cheap contemporaries. Suspense takes a backseat to gore. Plus, story and thematic elements from the original were discarded. But fortunately, Halloween II stands tall compared to most sequels and ripoffs from its era. It keeps the style of the original and isn't totally devoid of atmosphere or suspense. Overall, it's okay, but unnecessary.

A huge drop in quality compared to the first movie. I liked cinematography style of the first one, and it's still here, but everything else seems to have worked better with Mr. Carpenter in charge. Story got worse with all that celtic supernatural stuff added too. Director/producers seems to overcompensate obvious shortcomings with graphic scenes of killings. A very nice pair of boobs that can be seen in this film is worth noting.

Damn, this was pretty solid for a sequel. Sometimes silly, sometimes just iconic, it offers enough moods and thrills to stand up to the original. Loved the stupid deaths and Myers having something of a minor headache after being shot in the head. It's really part of the franchise and the silly stuff that I enjoy. Why does a tub in the hospital have a separate setting for 'scalding', though? For someone wanting to cook a really large lobster?

With the exception of more explicit death scenes and some gore, it desperately tries to replicate Carpenter's masterpiece. It makes the case of an immediate sequel, which provides slow-paced narrative and menacing suburban. Plot is basically Myers trying to reach Strode at the hospital, killing a bunch of people on the way. Kudos for the nice stuff: dude mistaken by Myers and run over by the cops, Strode shooting right on Myers' eyes, and Myers walking in flames until finally accepting defeat.

This is a fascinating one just from a structural point of view. Almost no agency in our main character, and yet the film holds revelations, choices are made that affect the plot, the tension ramps up to a climax. I've never seen anything like this. And yet, if viewed as a continuation of one story rather than a story separate but connected to Halloween (1978), it makes a lot more sense. Also, Dean Cundey made this look spectacular.

Picking up immediately after the first film ended and staying in that timeframe is unusual, but it results in the main character being marginalized and left sedated in a hospital bed for the majority of the film. Instead we mostly focus on a completely new set of characters being hacked and slashed by Michael Myers and this isn't as interesting when these characters are so poorly written. There are a couple of decent scares/kills though so it's not completely without merit in the genre.

A very underrated horror film, simply because it is the sequel to one of the best, if not the best horror film ever made. It's fast paced, the kills are inventive, and Michael still feels like Michael, unlike the ghost like figure he became later in the series and the thug he became in the remake and its sequel. It's just so derivative of the first film to the point where you literally see scenes and motifs ripped from the first film; it really cheapens the experience. Competent, but mediocre. It gives us the excuse the first film wouldn't. Carpenter refused to offer us the comfort of knowing the killer's motive, and that refusal is ultimately what keeps Halloween Numero Uno fresh. Even after Halloween and Black Christmas, you rarely see a motiveless killer in a film--it's too uncomfortable, too Lovecraftian, and too Tate-LaBianca for execs. With an excuse, The Shape is only Michael Myers: Loco Con Cuchillo rather than Pure Evil That Walks. Dull stuff.

Only just saw this in 2014, the only film in the series I hadn't seen, mostly because I had never encountered anyone who liked it or anything that suggested it had any redeeming qualities of any sort. The score, while very similar to that of the first, is now mostly performed on what seems to be a relatively primitive electronic keyboard, in a way that makes it far less effective and far more annoying. Curtis is more-or-less catatonic, Pleasance the sole non-awful element. As bad as rumoured.
