Pretty cool Hegelian theme running throughout, ultimately culminating in "synthesis" when the teacher and student meet in the hotel room. I thought that scene was a bit too slick and it kind of ruined the film a little for me, but it sure does beat the pants off of most "white teacher in an inner city school" movies.

This movie stole both the nacho cheese and interupting cow jokes. When starting this movie I never thought it could end with the final line being the interrupting cow joke. Now I spun this joke off during the summer of 2000 to things such as the interupting duck, dog and the infamous interupting squirrel (story for another time) Gosling was a lot better in this as compared to that horrible notebook flick (date strongly disagrees). Don't exactly get the ending, but overall a powerful flick.

One of my favorite American films this decade, I'm finding Half Nelson's strengths stand up on repeated viewings. While framing the underlying idea of the film through the class lectures is a little obvious, I appreciate the more complicated way the central relationships embody this 'dialectic.' The relationships, esp. between Dan and Drey are allowed room to breathe through the mundane of life rather than having 'meaningful' conversations all the time. I also like the music and non-verbal comm.

I like the idea behind this movie. The death of politics and ideology. But their are some flaws. The camera work for example, for some reason the hand camera doesn't do it for me in this movie. The ending is also quite fast and contradictory to the film. But still a great movie.

(after repeat viewings) If history is the study of change over time, as taught to his students by Mr. Dunne, so is his personal story over the course of this film, one that explores a friendship between two contrasting yet complementary characters whose lives are mutually challenged and transformed. It's a small yet impactful film that truly works.

Ugly, amateurishly jittery camera work obscures an intelligent, insightful portrait of addiction; we're a long way from THE LOST WEEKEND in Gosling's sensitive, moving portrait of a man at the end of his rope while doing a terrific job of functioning professionally - his MR CHIPS scenes are the most moving, because we can clearly see what might have been. Epps and Mackie are no less impressive in support - it's a shame that the presentation works so hard to deliberately undermine their efforts.

Top badass moment? I was put in mind of a possible sequel to this film, an over-the-top and violent, 18 rated action/horror, where a group of black suited and tooled up Ofsted inspectors go into Dann Dunne's school and put it into 'Special Measures'. Not that it would matter much to him though, as in these post Harvey Weinstein days he'd have already been reported by the teacher he tried to force himself on. He's not exactly an ideal role model. 1 cat, no chainsaws or decapitations.

The acting is very good, very naturalistic. However there is no resolution to the story and the whole film feels a bit pointless. The plot is fairly straight-forward and doesn't really develop. There are some themes that are explored pretty well, but I feel they maybe could've done more within this running time. Film also works as a rather long advert to discourage people from using (hard)drugs.

Realistic yet touching and tender, "Half Nelson" benefits from Ryan Gosling's great performance, solid direction (that nevertheless relies too much on hand-held camera) and a piercing, emotional and fittingly ambiguous script. The combination of those elements triggers some truly powerful scenes and interactions, while a superb Broken Social Scene soundtrack is the perfect underscore for this moving picture.

I really couldn't tell you why I liked the film so much. I guess I could identify with Dan. Just like the drugs he abuses, his inability to grasp his lofty ideals simultaneously lift him up and brutally drag him down. So he is left a vessel of distorted wisdom, for which he forsakes his one meaningful position, "Coach".

I would love to rate this movie higher because Ryan Gosling gives a stellar performance. Ryan can't make up for the lack of movement in the script. It just is such a slow moving film that it bores you. I hung on to the very end just because I'm a huge fan of Ryan. I think the story was there, but the script wasn't well put together.

I understand the director's intention to shoot this like it's the fucking Bourne Ultimatum, but it's an incredibly insipid gimmick that drags down an otherwise okay movie. Gosling is really, really good, but when it comes down to it, "Troubled, drug-addled affluent white writer" is a lot less interesting than Shareeka Epps' wonderful portrayal as a much more troubled student.

This overrated film is an example of everything wrong on today's indie cinema. It tries desperately to stay away from the conventions of this kind of plot (Dangerous Minds etc.) but it still remains as shallow and didactic as most of them, although in a subtle way. The documentary-like cinematography doesn't help either, and seems like a product of its times more than an artistic choice. It gets better as it goes (mostly thanks to Shareeka Epps) but all in all, this is a deceitful, bad film.

First viewing. A tad aimless, although I imagine that's much the intent. There's never really much narrative momentum as we tour from one hard-fought day to the next for both of our protagonists. And I only have so much patience for watching the drug-addled be strung out, although Gosling's deft touch deflects much of that. Liberal use of shaky cam grows a touch tiresome by the end. Still, a great performance from the leading pair means much of the pathos is translated to the audience.

It's been less than 12 hours since I saw Half Nelson and it's already becoming mixed up with my memories of other independent, underplayed, shaky hand-held camera 'kitchen sink' dramas of its type. The performances are good and having known a guy similar to Dunne there's definitely truth in this tale, but aside from some vague (and occasionally overt) allegory on American civil rights I just didn't see what the point in the whole thing was. The conclusion feels like a bit of a lazy cop-out too.

Even though Half Nelson came first, I was reminded of Terri while watching it, which I also just recently saw for the first time. Both wonderful films about the power of teacher-pupil connection. Half Nelson is of course much darker - on the surface, at least - in that our protagonist is very visibly troubled by a drug addiction; that makes for a very interesting mood, as our attitudes towards his friendship with his disaffected student are complex and a tad reticent. Gosling and Epps are great.

Watch this with Season 4 of The Wire (which has a few of the same young actors), and it underscores how the inner-city education system seems to be hanging by a thread. Then you should follow it up with "Bad Teacher." The story meanders in endearing ways, and the acting is excellent, especially Shareeka Epps. Half Nelson offers a refreshing change of pace from most modern dramas about serious issues, treating the characters as real-life human beings, with their own sets of problems and ways of coping that, while not exactly what we might choose to do for ourselves, never has us reviling some of the poor life decisions they make for themselves.
